Question about Sharp R-230 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Blows fuse It worked fine for 15 during boiling a cup of water the 20A fuse smoked. I replaced it, it powered up but when I tried to boil water the fuse blew again. I guess it's really sick... Thanks, Matt

    Thank you Guys!

I think this (HV capacitor) could be the problem, but I thought was asking about different model: R-9H94B, 900W oven with 1450W Convection Heater, this is what I have. I'll follow up with the test and try to repair it myself. (I am an electronic technician but I was working as a computer tech.) Will be in touch.

The problem was what you described! I replaced a shorted .96 mF capacitor and the associated diode that was open; it cost me $47.00.

Thank you Guys again, you're great! Now I have two microwaves, because in the mean time I bought a nice little GE with a browner. (My wife couldn't wait until I fix the Big Sharp...)

If it went dead almost immediately after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a shorted high-voltage capacitor.

If it went dead several seconds after pressing the Start pad, that's usually a failing high-voltage transformer.

If it goes dead or blows the breaker (or GFI) when you plug it in or open or close the door, then there's a problem with a door switch or door switch mount.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for test help, but read the safety warnings first:
(if it is NOT shorted or burned looking, it's probably fine)

The best place to order parts for this brand is Encompass (formerly Tritronics). Or you can call them toll-free at 866-779-5835.

I want to know how many watts my 2002 jvm1430bd002 microwave has...I have googled this question and have answers ranging from 700 to 1200! what gives???

Conduct what the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service calls a "Time-to-Boil" test, which will help you estimate your microwave's wattage. Add 1 cup of water to a microwave-safe 2-cup measure. Add ice cubes and stir until the water is icy cold. Pour out the excess water, leaving just 1 cup. Place the measuring cup inside the microwave. Set the oven for four minutes on high. Watch through the glass to see when the water boils. If it takes less than two minutes, the microwave is 1,000 watts or more; if it takes 2.5 minutes, the oven has a rating of 800 watts or more; if it boils in 3 minutes, the estimated wattage is 650 to 700.

You can call 800 233-9054 they have the poaching cups. I just bought the measuring cup. They are kind of expensive but I've had my poacher for 20 years and it works so well I think it's worth the investment.

Kenmore microwave Model 72 8975590 (750 W) is taking longer to heat food. Takes 3.5 min to bring one cup water to boil, previously took 2,5 to 3 min. Does the element lose power over time?

I can adjust the power level so that circuitry seems to be ok. The longer water boil time could be partially due to the colder winter temperature of the inlet water. We'll just cook the food a bit longer as long as the magnetron is still working.

MY whirlpool microwave model#mh6100xybo, quit working in the middle of reheating.

Usually when a microwave regardless of brand quits mid cycle the main fuse has failed. It is easily located as it will be the very first connection point off of the end of the power cord. Remove all of the chassis screws usually 4 on the sides and 6 on the back of the unit. Then begin lifting the chassis up at about a 15 deg angle and pull to the rear, Once the chassis is removed be very careful no to touch the large capacitor as it will still have a considerable charge. Locate the power fuse by following the power cord to the white and black terminals and remove the fuse. Purchase an exact replacement fuse and replace it. Reinstall the chassis cover without the screws and test the function of the unit by heating a cup of water until it boils. If it passes this simple test it should be fine. If it works momentarily and then quits the power diode has probably failed. The power diode is a 2.5 inch long and 0.5 inch wide and black located either on the bottom of the chassis or the inside back panel. This can be tested with an ohm meter by testing resistance. Set the meter to any ohm setting and place the test leads one on each terminal. The power diode should only read in one direction. If it reads in both directions (reverse the position of the test leads on the terminals) then the power diode has failed and will need to be replaced.

Owners of a GE WES model might want to look at this blog post.

I'm sure the magnetron overheated and tripped the magnetron's thermal cutout.

I'd strongly suggest taking it back if you can.

Boiling water

This is not unusual, and it can reuslt in a nasty burn.

It may help if you be sure the sides of the container are wet before you heat it.

Also, after heating, if you push the microwave back and forth a little bit before opening the door, that may trigger the outburst in a safer manner.

Even better, if this happens a lot with a certain container, put a wooden (non-metallic) spoon in the container before you heat it.

Here's an interesting article about this from Snopes:

And an advisory from the FDA:

2 year old ge profile spacemaker Microwave lost all power

Inside unit is a cylinder fuse which can blow for a number of reasons. External cover needs to be removed to access. If you are confident in doing this and can find & check the fuse then it would be my first guess. If fuse is OK then you will need to have repaired. If fuse isblown & you replace then it blows again, you will need to have repaired. regards
