Hello.

There is either something that prevents the DVD tray from closing, make sure to insert the disc fully in the circle or if it isnt that the rubber belt in the DVD-drive is stretched out and not strong enough to close the tray completely when a disc is inserted, this is a known issue of these drives and often causes the drives not to open properly as well.

You can solve this either by replacing the belt or you can do a little trick which fixes the drive in 90% of the case.
How to do this is shown here: http://xbox-experts.com/e/tutorial.php?n=dvdopentray

I hope this helps.

Kind Regards,

Tray won't close

Use the following steps to close the disc tray on an original Xbox 360 console.
Step 1: Remove the disc from the tray Step 2: Make sure the faceplate is on correctly
The faceplate is the plastic piece on the front of your console.
  • Press firmly around the edges of your faceplate to snap it into place (make sure it is flush with the rest of the console). If the faceplate is not on correctly, the disc tray won't close.
  • If you find that the faceplate is the problem, please contact Xbox Support to order a replacement faceplate.
If this does not resolve your issue, please try step 3. Step 3: Press the eject buttonTry closing the disc tray by pressing the eject button. If the disc tray successfully closes, open the tray and insert a disc. Now try opening and closing the tray with a disc in the tray.
Note Make sure that the disc isn't sticky and doesn't have any labels that could prevent the tray from closing.
If your disc drive still will not close, please try step 4. Step 4: Move the disc drive tray

Open/Close tray message

This means that you need your DVD drive replaced. If you are under your 1 year warranty from MS go to www.xbox.com/support and fill out a repair request. If you are out of warranty make sure that you only let an experienced professional perform this repair. If you do the repair on your own, or have someone that doesn't know what they are doing do it then it's very likely your Xbox will never play games again. There is vital information on the old DVD drive that must be extracted and put into the replacement in order for your 360 to allow it to play games. I can do this repair for you if you'd like. Email me at Jordan@jordanselectronics.com for more info.

Xbox 360 disk tray wont stay shut

My 360 is/was having a similar problem...my 360 would say "reading disc" then "open tray". Well since my system is only about 8 months old...I opted to send it in for repair. Its under warranty. My system is in route to be fixed as we speak. I would advise you to get yours registered too.

Xbox dvd drive

I have had both these problems before.

For the drive tray door that will NOT open do this.
  1. Turn off, disconnect from the TV and unplug your XBOX (otherwise your risk the remote chance of causing a short).
  2. Get a paper clip and insert it into the tiny hole just to the left of the power button to manually open the tray door.
  3. While the tray is open take a Q-tip (aka cotton swab) and clean the edges of the tray guides and carefully spray a little compressed air into the bay (***do NOT shake can before or during use and hold the can vertically so only air and no refrigerant comes out***).
  4. If this does not fix your problem you while have to have your XBOX serviced unless your are comfortable taking your XBOX and DVD drive.
For the DVD tray that will not stay closed.
  1. See step 3 and 4 above.
For disassembling your XBOX and DVD drive there are numerous guides online. (www.llamma.com/xbox/Repairs/cleaning_your_dvd_drive.htm)

Xbox does not read discs.

Getting to the dashboard screen is a good thing but still cannot rule out a bad circuit board or power supply. All the symptoms point to a bad DVD drive but the opening/closing by itself do indicate a problem with the microprocessor. Can you turn the power on and off with the small button?? If not, would definitely suspect bad board.
