k, sorry. i did download the latest code, i normally get my codes from the viewsat website, (through a friend via email) and this last time i got it from the website 'totalfta.com.' and after that, it's been nothing but problems. my receiver did work for a few hours, then the programming started to freeze. there was another code out, so i tried to download it, and that's when i would get 'FAIL' after i download, and when i turn the viewsat on, i can't get past the 4 lines. i think i got like a virus from a bad set of codes. that's my initial thought. i've had no problem, but i got impatient for my friend to send me the new code, so i found it online from what i thought was a reliable source. but who knows. thanks for your response!!

hey, thanks for the response. i just tried to do a factory reset. when it is finished, right after it reaches 100%, it says 'FAIL' i think that i need to fix the fail problem before i can move on. do any of you know how to do that??

RescueTechLA: He (or she) is referring to an FTA satellite box.

You need to hook that box up to your PC or laptop by way of a serial cable and run a factory reset/factory file reload. That friend you allude to could be very helpful in respect to this issue if they are familiar with FTA.

I hear they talk about that receiver model over at ftatalk. Beyond that I can't be of much assistance.

Those four lines are usually hardware related.

When you say you tried to download the latest "fix".

What "fix" are you talking about?

When i try to turn my laptop on, i see a screen with white lines and it won't work. What should i do?

If you have an external monitor or LCD monitor, try connecting it to the laptop and then turn the laptop on - if external video shows up normally then most likely you have a bad screen; if both internal and external video shows pretty much the same white lines / white outs then the system (systemboard) is most likely bad.

hi there.
try going into the bios and check if the lines are still there, If the lines are visible while in the bios it means that the LCD is the point of failure however if it's not then go to safe mode with networking so you can still connect to the internet and then download the latest driver for your video card from sony or the video card manufacturer.
Hope this helps!

Hi there,

You may be having a problem with the graphics driver of your laptop. You can try to download the graphics driver specific for your laptop model and operating system. The best to check if it is not an issue with the LCD is to attach an external monitor and check if the line appears on the external display.

Hope this simple tip helps.

Red line on screen

Are you able to view the same Red lines even in the BIOS window? If yes, this may be LCD issue too.. The LCD will show small red dots which are called Dead Pixels. If the Red lines and dots are more, then it is better to contact the Service Center

Multiple squiggly lines fill the LCD screen, after

Sounds to me like your inverter has gone bad. Typically it's situated just below your LCD. To get to it you will have to take out the screws around the LCD bezel. It's a long, skinny circuit board that the LCD plugs into. You can usually find a replacement on Ebay. Just be sure that you're ordering the correct part, otherwise it may not fit or work properly. I've also had times when the entire LCD was going bad and the display was full of squiggly lines. It's hard to say which one is the cause. I would try replacing the inverter first. That part is usually much cheaper than the LCD is.

The Flickering White Lines

Your lcd is going out. The problem will get worse and worse until it eventually dies.

Good news for you though, that lcd is fairly inexpensive to replace with one from ebay.

Best of luck!

Oh, one more thing you should try updating the bios firmware, and video drivers to see if that solves the problem, it won't but...it's still a good idea to have the latest versions anyways.

Best of luck!

Blue vertical line

The lines appearing on your LCD means it has a defect on the screen.

There are 3 types of pixel defect
1) dead pixel - pixel is always off
2) stuck pixel - pixel is always on
3) hot pixel - pixel is on but in red, green, blue or yellow, can also be a light black color

You can try to fix stuck or hot pixels but dead is dead.
1st method, flashing different colors rapidly:
JSScreenfix.com has a great tool. This is their free java applet or you can download it below.

2nd method, applying pressure to pixel:
Damp paper towel, Small stylus or dull pencil.

3rd method, tapping the pixel:
Pen with cover on or another small, blunt object.

If your laptop is still under warranty, get it replaced. If not you are looking at the most expensive part in a laptop to get replaced. (LCD screens on laptop is roughly equivalent to 40-60% of the total laptop cost

Please rate this if it this helps.

Screen showing funny lines and colors.

That would be the screen itself that needs replaced, if you needed the inverter board you screen would be dark and hardly visable

D505 vertical line issue

The lines are cause by dead pixel sensors. There are hundreds of pixel sensors at the edges of the screen, when one of these sensors fails, then the result is a line. The line can vary in color, but they all have the same cause. I know you don't want to hear this, but you are going to have to replace the lcd in order to fix the problem, but hey, 4 years is a good run time without any major issues. Here's a link for instructions on changing the screen. It's for a D610, but the D505 is basically the same machine.
