My Figidaire microwave also caught fire just last night. Model # PLMB209DCC.  Fortunately I was paying attention, but it could have been a disaster.

The microwave in our rental house had sparks and smoke. the tenants unplug it. When I called repairman out, he took off the waveguide and said it was burnt and we need to replace the microwave. If they had not been in the kitchen it would have caught on fire. Is this normal..

I brought a Frigidaire Professional microwave 7/8/11. It started making a strange sound about Dec 2012. I thought the turntable was off because it only occasionally made the noise. However, last week it made the sound with and electrical smell. I live alone, only use it to warm leftovers or cook frozen veggies and it does not have baked on material. It is an Electrolux FPBM189KFC made in Thailand Dec. 2010

I hope there were no injuries!

I'm currently working as an electronics expert witness and consultant for a law firm that specializes in nationwide consumer protection cases.

The first thing I would suggest is that if you still have the microwave, please be sure to preserve it in the state it is in, and protect it from any damage. It is very important evidence.

Also, if the fire didn't damage the model number tag inside the cooking cavity, please contact me with the model number, "FCC ID" number, and serial number.

If the tag was damaged and can't be read, hopefully you have written down at least the model number in your owner's manual or on your sales receipt?

As you and I discuss your situation, rest assured that I understand the need for privacy and confidentiality to protect your interests in this matter.

I would also suggest that you not discuss this situation with anyone except on a "need to know" basis. That's why I had you contact me directly instead of replying to you in a public forum on FixYa.

My expenses are already paid, and there will be no charge for my helping you.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Well, my fiancee walked out of the room while she was heating some caramel while we were watching the SuperBowl. That resulted in a small fire in the microwave. Singed and blackened the cover on the roof...

Appliance Parts Pros has parts for your model, but they aren't cheap.

The cover keeps food splashes and vapors out of the waveguide. Garbage in the waveguide will degrade performance and could cause magnetron failure or another fire.

If the oven has already quit working (no power), the fire opened up the oven cavity thermal cutout (that's what the part is for). A generic replacement is about $5.

Maybe you've already seen this two-year old post on the same subject.

You stupid crooks, you say it is free advice and then you ask for

Why the "you stupid crooks" thing? You come on here looking for something for nothing, then bad mouth those who take the time to hhelp you at their expense. You are barking up the wrong tree fella. Fixya .com has an address. File your grievance with them. If you can handle the cost of postage. Now, this is free advice but it will cost me the privilage of helping those who want and need the help. Good Luck and have a happy and carefree holiday. I wish you the best the holidays can bring. My mothers Kenmore countertop microwave oven caught on fire late one evening. She remembers nothing of the fire circumstances as she was in a burn center for six weeks. My sister had the same model...

There is a GE/Kenmore recall: I don't know if your relative's models are involved. I suggest that you file an incident report with the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

My Frigidaire Microwave caught on fire

The owner's manual warns of the dangers of overcooking potatoes and similar foods and not to ever leave the oven unattended while it's running.

If for some reason you don't have your owner's manual, you can download Frigidaire owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

Are you looking for help to get your microwave working again?

Chances are it's just an opened flame sensor (cavity thermostat / thermal cutout / T.C.O.). Its job is to cut power if there's a fire.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

Accessing some components for testing and possible replacement (like the oven cavity thermostat) will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

American Home shield said that the waveguide is burnt

The reality is that microwave ovens have gone way down in price while repairs have gone way up. Go to a Walmart or a K mart and you will find many microwaves in the 50-90 dollar range. Even if you could have your current microwave repaired it is still ten years old, well beyond it's life expectancy.
