I'm not sure I understand your question. Of course it can be hooked up without a VCR. What exactly are you asking?

No VCR required - A VCR is a video cassette recorder, which requires a video cassette in order to record source material. A DVD recorder, requires DVD discs and this model in particular has a built in hard drive so you don't even need discs either, unless you plan to share recordings with others. All you need is a 'feed' / 'source' from an external aerial like Cable or Sky etc.
Does that help?

Why won't dmr e85h pick up all the digital channels the tv attached to it will? Is it outdated technology? Do you need a digital set top box or completely replace the unit? Anyone...?

You most likely will need a set top box connected to this recorder in order to receive digital channels, Assuming the DVD recorder works besides this detail, you should not need to replace the unit. Only replace it if it DOESN'T work.

The DMR-E85H is a 2005 model so it is more than 5 years old.

I need to connect my Panasonic DMR-E85H DVD to an old HMV TV. I need to know what the frequency of the out pout would be for the A1, A2, A3 output channels from the DVD and what the input frequencies...

It doesn't use TV channels, it uses AV, Audio Visual, input. That means you hook up, to the, whats called the EXTERNAL Inputs, A1, A2, A3, these are the external inputs that relate to the Jacks on the rear/side of the unit. You use the output from the DVD, and hook it up to the AV input on TV. Press Play on DVD and Select, correct external input on TV. Usually it;s Yellow to Yellow Red to Red and White to White.

How do I connect DMR-E85H to a VHS to copy tapes? How do I 'finalize' the DVD when I'm finided recording (i.e.- how do I connct the lines to be ableto accomplish this/view the process)?

I assume you are using a seperate vcr,you need to connect a scart lead into av1 on the vcr, then the other end into av2 on the dvd,you then select av2 as your recording channel on the dvd,to finalize if you go into the disc menu it will tell you what to do.

To setup your IR Blaster (transmitter), hold down the channel up and down button at the same time on you the unit for more than 5 second until the unit says bye and 12:00 flashes, then power on unit and the setup screen will come on your TV.
