Question about HP PC Desktops

Immediately upon boot, vertical lines appear on screen. After several minutes the screen turns pick and the windows cursor appears. there is no further change in the display. Mouse appears to work. Not keyboard. Any thoughts?

My first check would be video drivers if this is a newly built computer. If it is a computer that has been running a while and the problem suddenly appeared I would reseat the RAM and attempt to boot into safe mode, suspecting a virus infection.

Reset bios


Installing a fresh operating system is a good option, and there might be a feature in the BIOS to restore the system to factory defaults. Information on how to do this:

Using PC Restore:

1. Turn on the computer.

During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top
of the screen.

2. Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>.
If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish
starting, and then restart the computer again.

NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot.

3. Click Restore and click Confirm.
The restore process takes approximately 6 to 10 minutes to complete.

4. When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.

NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer
completely reboot.

5. When prompted, click Yes.

The computer restarts.

Because the computer is restored to its original
operating state, the screens that appear, such as the End User License
Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the computer

The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.

7. After the computer restarts, click OK.

Use Dell PC Restore by Symantec only as the last method to restore your operating system. PC

Restore restores your hard drive to the operating state it was in when you purchased the computer.

Any programs or files added since you received your computer-including data files-are

messages, digital photos, music files, and so on. If possible, back up all data before using PC

Black vertical lines & looks like safe mode when XP is loading


ur video card heats to much, so check if the fan in ur video card is working, if ur video card didn't have a fan try to install one

Computer only displays vertical lines and pink background.


Most likely an issue with the Video Card or Video driver.
* Boot to safe mode by tapping F8 while starting up the computer. Selected safe mode with the keyboard and hit enter. Login to your user account. You should see the words “Safe Mode” on all four corners,
* Open device manager – Right click “My Computer” – Select “Manage” – Selected device manager from the left. Under display driver, you should see your vide card listed. Right click on it and select “Disable”.
Now restart your computer and if this resolves the issue, then the vide card may be at fault. You could also try updating the video driver.
Do let me know if you get this far.

Screen Wiggles, CPU Shuts Self Off, Powers Up Very Slowly


Hmm... Any errors on the screen?

Could be a power supply. Fluctuations in that can cause power drops, which would be visible in the video card, and if severe enough, cause the PC to shut off. There are 4 screws and one 1 wire holding those in. It would take about 10 minutes to replace and probably cost you $40-$50 in parts.

To have Geeks do it: Probably $100.

Most times on startup the screen remains white although if i leave it on i can hear windows logon sound but cant see it. other times if it manages to boot up when the windows black initialising screen...


reet your display properties to defaults.
g o to my computer proeprties then advsnced and then enable the otiojn button besr performance.
