Question about Pentair 1.0 Hp Whisperflo Pump

1 Answer

Do i have the right size pump for my 10,000 +/- inground pool

I added a hayward navigator pool cleaner and noticed I had to close the suction valve [both cleaner and skimmer share same line] aprox 90%. I have a pentair 2hp pump and pentair clear plus cartridge filter. The navigator worked great for couple months, climbing the walls ecc. I know there is a little wear on the toes, but the pressure guage is higher than normal as if the filter is clogged. I ran the pool without the filters installed and the navigator worked a bit better. Which leads me to believe the cartridges need to be replaced. And or maybe the pump seal needs to be replaced. Or while I have the pump apart, can I install a larger impeller to the pump. And whats your take on cartridge filters verses de filters? Before I pay $400 to replace cartridges I just might want to replace the whole system. I would gladly respect an honest professonal's advice since I don't know who I should trust. The pool company who installed my pool? Or the pool store looking to survive in these trying times. Thanks, Bruce

Bruce,
the cartridge element system you have is designed to be used for at least two seasons before needing to replace the elements. You are correct thinking that the pressure going through the filter is causing the problems with the cleaner.
if you take the elements out of the filter and see if cleaner works that will show you whether or not it is time to change the filter elements. That filter is very expensive to replace. cheaper to just change the elements.

Can the Navigator be adjusted for the speed?

The Speed of a Navigator is adjusted by water flow. There is no adjustment on the unit itself. The more flow through the unit the faster it will go. If the unit moves too fast or too slow proper cleaning may be sacrificed. The proper flow can be achieved using the flow meter that comes with the unit.

Many pools are set up with multiple shut-off valves in front of the pump. These regulate flow from bottom suction lines, skimmer suction lines, and vacuum suction lines. If you have these valves, make sure the valve on the line the vacuum is attached to is fully open and then adjust the flow by closing off the other valves slowly until proper flow is reached. This is where the flow meter is used.

If there are no valves and the Navigator is moving too fast, an in-line valve is also supplied with the unit and can be used to regulate the flow. This valve is installed between the vac hose and the port where the vacuum is connected to the pool (side port or skimmer).

Hayward Navigator just had shoes and wings replaced. Everything seems to be working but moves extremely slow, even when suction is increased.

Did you have the turbine and A-Frame inspected or the gear box at the back of the cleaner looked at? Hayward Navigators are 100% repairable and most every pool store carries every single part to make the repairs. If these parts are also worn down, you will notice performance issues with your cleaner.
Before we assume the worst, lets run the cleaner through a few inspections.
Simple Troubleshooting for your Hayward Navigator When It Is Not Moving

The most common reason the Hayward Navigator stops moving is there is something blocking the mouth of the cleaner. Pull the cleaner out of the water while the equipment is turned off and make sure the cleaner is not clogged with debris or plugged with a pool toy. Also, make sure that all the internal components are properly installed.

Not Enough Suction - Next, verify that there is enough suction to allow the cleaner to work properly. While the pool equipment is on, lift the Hayward Navigator to just below the surface of the water and feel to see if there is a reasonable amount of suction getting to the cleaner. If there doesn't seem to be enough pressure, make sure all baskets are clear of debris, the main pool filter is clean, and that the diverter valve is open to the pool cleaner.

Small Debris Inside the Navigator - If there seems to be enough suction getting to the Navigator, but the pods are not moving back and forth, there is probably some small debris inside the cleaner that is stopping the turbine from moving. In order to remove any debris from inside the cleaner, remove the small access cover from the bottom of the cleaner by loosening the one screw until the plate pulls off. Use your fingers or the hose to clean the inside of the cleaner out.

If following these simple troubleshooting tips doesn't correct your cleaner issue, there is probably a mechanical issue. Take your cleaner into a local swimming pool retailer or have a service company out to assist (though most pool stores will not ever charge you for labor to make repairs!)

If it's a suction cleaner, give it more suction. Clean the filter and adjust valves to give correct suction

1/2hp Hayward Pump for existing inground pool

you will be fine with the 1/2hp. The Hayward will move quite a bit of water as well. It may not move as much water as the 3/4hp but it's very close and the 1/2hp will cost a little less to operate so if anything, you may just have to run it for one additional hour per day to compensate. You will be surprised how much water a 1/2hp will move. The only issue with smaller pumps is if you have pop-up cleaner heads or a suction driven automatic cleaner such as a kreepy krauly, however, if a 3/4hp will run it, a 1/2hp will run it as well. You can install a larger motor on the super pump but it will not move more water unless you upgrade the impeller as well. Just make sure you don't use a bigger impeller than what the motor is rated for because it will strain the motor and cause it to overheat. Hope this helps.

We have no suction in our vaccuum line. we have

some plumbing situations allow you to close a valve or two off in front of the pump...(suction side) check and make sure the obvious, (that the cleaner line is not closed)... next if its possible to shut down say the main drain and leave the skimmer open....doing this will allow the pump to pull from one source and therefore pull harder from that one source....therefore moving a vacuum.... the navigators are notorious for breaking down and needing special attention due to the multitude of moving parts in them

Suction with my pump

First thing to check is the removal of any winterizing plugs in the return lines. Sometimes plugs are fitted inside the lines in the pool making them not obvious. Secondly, check that any valves in return line are open. Many never lube type valve handles are oppositely positioned as compared to ball valves. If the multiport valve hasn't been tampered with, then there really is no other place to look. The flows everywhere but back to pool.
