There are many solutions to this problem, it being one of the most talked about problem in gaming. why it happens is because the heat sink is to small on the motherboard. why? to fit the dvd drive. so, the best solutions is to take the hard drive off, and send it out to microsoft to fix this. that is what i recomend. it should take about 1 to 2 weeks to get it back

I have 4 red lights on xbox 360 how do i fix it?

This is known as the 'red ring of death' It is likely that you will need to send in your Xbox to Microsoft for repair. It is possible that you are still covered under warranty. Does the E74 error message appear? See here http://bit.ly/56NTkB

Alternatively Microsoft recommends trying a different set of Audio Video cables.Source http://bit.ly/6eWcLD

Good luck

Power button is blinking red

if 3 of 4 lights are blinking red, you have a red ring of death and need to contact microsoft. this is distubingly common on some of the older 360 models.

Red Ring of Death : 1 Red Light

Well the why part of your question can be answered here - http://www.xbox.com/en-US/search.aspx?keyword=one+red+light

They go into many of the error codes, as to how to fix it without voiding the warranty; If it's under warranty send it in to be fixed, or if you're dying to play right now try the 'towel method' shown here -
http://www.xbox360rally.com/the-red-ring-of-deathcure-found/

Beware- purposefully overheating your xbox 360 may damage your system further.

1 red light flashing

1 red light indicates that there is general hardware related problem with the console, 2 red lights indicate the overheating of the console, 3 red lights indicate the red ring of death and 4 red lights indicate that you need to tighten your AV console wire. If you get any of the problems and your system is under warranty, you can ship your console directly to Microsoft and you will get back your Xbox 360 red ring fixed by the manufacturer, however it might take more than a month and you will also have to bear the additional shipping charges. If your warranty period is over, you will have to pay additional amount of $140, if you choose to send the Xbox 360 to Microsoft for red ring fix. Further you will have to also bear the shipping amount and wait for at least a month for getting your console back. However, you can avoid this and can repair your console your own. There are many good guides available at Internet and you can go through any one of them and can fix Xbox 360 red ring problems your own.
