I have a HP pavilion a1700n and the dvd quit working. I bought a hp dvd/cd writer 1270i. This unit has SATA connection. I noticed that my a1700n has an unused SATA connector and there are three unused...

A SATA hard drive needs to be pugged into a SATA port on the motherboard. They're the "L" shaped ports. They look like this: moondogwst75_2.jpg
The little blue ports. The hard drive should have come with the appropriate cable. Other than that, just plug in a SATA power connector to your hard drive and you should be golden. Hope this helps!

Remove hard drive

Step 1: Use the following steps to open the case:
  1. Unplug all cables except for the power. Write down each cable location if you do not already know where it connects.
  2. Unplug the power cable and with the power cable removed press the Power button on the front of the PC.
  3. Remove the screws on the rear of the PC.c00371492.jpg
  4. Slide both side panels off from the rear of the PC.c00371493.gif
  5. On some cases, it may be necessary to remove the front of the PC so that you can remove the drive cage. If so, press in on the tabs that retain the front cover, there should three to four on each side of the cover and gently pull forward. It helps to have a friend help with this process. Carefully detach any cables that may also be attached to the front cover.c00376513.gif
Step 2: Disconnecting the cables
If you are replacing a drive, use this section to find and unplug the IDE/Serial ATA or power cables. If you are adding an additional drive and the empty bay is part of a removable drive cage, use this section to find and unplug the cable to make the drive cage removal easier. If you are adding an additional drive into an empty drive bay on the chassis, skip this section and go to Step 5 .
  1. Find the hard drive. The hard drive usually sits under the CD and DVD drives and has a thin flat ribbon cable.
  2. Disconnect the IDE or Serial ATA cable and the power cable from the back of the drive. remember where each cable goes. IDE Serial ATA c00378000.jpg c00378001.jpg
c00564485.jpg Step 3: Removing the drive cage On many HP and Compaq PCs, drives are attached to drive cages. Often, the installation and removal instruction for the cages are located next to the drive cage or on the side panel. The following images are some examples of the types of drive cages that come on HP and Compaq PCs. For more detailed information information about a particular chassis, refer to the Hardware and Servicing guide or User Guide for your particular model of PC. Drive cage examples c00378002.gif c00378003.gif c00378004.gif c00378005.gif Step 4: Removing the drive
If the drive is attached to the chassis or drive cage with screws, remove the screws and slide the drive out.If the drive is retained by a plastic latching system, lift the latch to slide the drive out.Set the old drive aside. If the drive is to be re-used, place it in an ESD safe container for storage.

Can I install a hard drive in an HP Pavilion 6736 which has a capacity greater than 20GB ? If so, is there an upper limit to the capacity..can I install a 120 GB drive?

The size is not an issue with the hardware normally. Usually it has to do with the operating system. If you are running an OS like windows xp you should have no problem.

Just make sure you are using the SAME type interface hard drive. Example PATA Parallel ATA, or Serial ATA (SATA).

HD failed, 2 different ones EIDE & ATA aren't seen, can I use I/O

did you change the IDE cable and change the molex power cable on the other drives. could have fried the IDE riser. they do make pci card that have IDE risers on them. may try that route. if the bios does not see them the drive is not communicating with the MO BO or is not getting power

My HP a1700n hard drive is failing. Can I replace

Its not difficult at all. Find a hard drive that you want to use, next get a case that you want to use as well then install the drive into the case. Next you need to figure out whether you want to hook it up by usb, firewire, SATA, etc. Then hook it up that way and fdisk, format and then install the operating system you want to on it.

In fact some hard drives now come with there own cases as well and can be as low as like $99 so really its the way that you want to do it. Just make sure you get the size hard drive you want and then the case you want to use for the connection type you want to use, with USB just plug it into a slot outside of the computer, SATA will require you to plug it into the inside of the computer and firewire would hookup outside of the computer.

SATA would be the fastest but would require you leaving the side panel off cause it would need to hook up inside of the computer.

What new HDD will match my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8?

Mark,
You can use any size HDD in your computer as a slave and it does not have to be an exact match for the maxtor. You will however need the make sure that the connections on the new drive match. For example SATA drives will not attache to an IDE cable and vice versa. The drive that you mentioned is an IDE style drive so unless your MOBO has SATA connectors on it you will need to buy an IDE/EIDE drive.

Windows XP SP2, Intel DG965WH mobo. Two SATA hard drives, two EIDE hard drives (WD200EB). Suddenly one day, without warning, the two EIDE drives just disappeared from the Hard Disk Drive list and files...

the problem sounds like you either lost the IDE channels on the MOBO or the chipset was updated with corrupt files.

run everest home and see if there are current updates for the northbridge chipset. if you have 2 ide channels on the board switch the primary and secondary ribbons and see if the hard drives are there. if your cdrom's are ide and after switching ribbon cables they disappear and the hard drives reappear your mobo lost an ide channel, you would need to replace the board.

Hard drive

According to http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/desktops/0,1000000973,10004197,00.htm this tower has Serial ATA, or SATA. Just to confirm, you can easily pop open the case and take a look at the hard-drives. If you see a wide thin ribbon-like cable connecting to your hard-drive then you need an Ultra ATA (or just ATA or IDE) drive. It looks like this:

If a thinner red cable connects to your drive, then that is SATA. It looks like this:

I need a new hard drive

You can go up to 120 GB for this model computer. Following is a link to Drive Solutions, Inc. It shows a 120 GB ATA drive available for your drive. ATA is the formal name for an IDE drive.

Here's the link:

Good luck.

Sata as boot and install eide drive as d:or e:

You can slave the EIDE hard drive off of the CD Drive, as long has it is also EIDE. There should be a flat grey ribbon cable plugged into the back of your CD Drive. That IDE ribbon cable should have 2 connectors on it, one of them should be plugged into the CD Drive.

If it does not have 2 connectors, then go buy a new IDE ribbon cable that has 2 connectors, they are cheap. Or ask a friend, he/she might have extra, I always do.

Make sure you have the jumper settings correct on both drives. One will be the master, the other should be the slave. Or set both to "select select" and let the computer decide. The jumper is a little black jumper that connects 2 pins together on back of the drive. This tells the drive if it is a master, slave or cable select.

There should be a sticker diagram on each drive denoting the correct pin-jumper setting.

One other thing, when you hook up 2 drives to 1 IDE cable, both drives share the bandwidth. If you are using one of the drives, don't try to use the other, major performance slow-down.

Also, you don't need to slave the drive. You can get a Hard drive enclosure and make the drive an external drive connected by USB. They are also cheap, but make sure the hard drive has a partition and is formatted before installing it in the enclosure.
