You could have a flow problem due to sludge or scale in the boiler, it could be a pump problem as it may not be circulating enough water around the system. or it could be a faulty thermostat if it is not cutting out soon enough.
1st try turning the boiler stat down to its minimum, if it still over heats then it is probably the stat.
if you have a switch on your pump to increase the speed make sure it is on setting 3. if the pump is old then it may be time for a replacement.

Baxi duotecHEa 40kw combi boiler made loud banging noises for 2 or 3 minutes then stopped. What might have been the problem

the banging is the water boiling/overheating Check the pump is working by undoing the large screw on the front of pump and gently putting a soft stick into the space behind to check that the rotor/impellor is turning. take care to catch the water which drips from the screw hole

it might be the thermal coupler....it is a piece of wire that goes from the pilot to the thermostat. very inexpensive. .I am a 50 yr old woman, and I changed mine on my furnace twice..Home Depot or equivalent should be able to help. Google "thermal coupler"
