Question about Kirby Generation 3 Bagged Upright Vacuum

1 Answer

The beater bar on my Kirby Generation 3 does not turn when it is on. I took it off and cleaned it but I am not sure which way to put beater bar back in. The ways I tried, it still doesn't work.

First - make sure that you are installing it right - see online manual HERE . If you still can not get it working right - issue new ticket and explain in more detail what is wrong there...

Good Luck

Belt is broken. Not sure how to replace

1. Get a long screw driver (probably phillips head) a strip of tape.
2. Look around underneath your vac for screws... look carefully because sometimes they are sneaky and hidden in weird areas like under the wheels, etc.
3. Take screws out stick them in order on tape turned upwards. (remember how you took them out.)
4. Gently remove the bottom cover.
5. Clean and remove debris, hair, dust bunnies, rocks... whatever.
6. Determine where the belt goes, disengage the beater bar on that side (may need to unscrew something) Belt on beater bar gears. Other end of belt on motor end... then stretch belt with beater bar until it fits back in it's place and replace any screws, etc.
7. Make sure the belt is seated properly.
8. replace cover, screws... test.**

** sometimes belts require that you put a twist in them so it can transition from the motor's direction to the beater bar's direction... if you twist the wrong way... the beater bar will spit dirt out the front of the vac.. (it's bulldozing it) In that case remove cover and twist the belt the other way.

Good luck.

Belt is on roller. Not sure how and how to reattach

When you put the beater bar back in have the belt hook in the normal operating position. Hold the whole beater bar housing upside down and turn the hook. It will grab the belt. Once it does, keep on turning. It will get tough to do, but turn it until you can't go anymore. Then put it all back together!

Need to change the belt on my kirby model 519, assuming this is the problem since the beater bar is not turning and I can smell burning rubber

The beater bar is jammed--usually from thread, string, and hair that is wound up on the bar and particularly on the bar end bearings. The bearings themselves usually require cleaning and re-oiling. The belt may be damaged sufficiently to require replacement as well. Make sure to install the new belt exactly as the old one came off. Make sure that the air passage from the bar area back into the machine is clear and passes air freely. Check the wheels for stuff wound up in the bearings. Hope this helps!

My kirby generation 3 wont come on

Make sure cord is not damaged. Check to see nothing is blocking hose or carpet nozzle(where beater brush is or brush roll). Plug unit in to a receptacle that you know has power going to it. (Lamp you know works when plugged into same. Using hose on front, make sure bag bottom completely attached to exhaust, the hose has a little arm like thing that will depress the safety switch on the front of the unit, and turn on using foot switch at the back of the unit. If these do not work, it could be one of two safety switches, dirt may have fouled or switch may need to be replaced. Hi, W/D here. Easy fix!
Flip the machine over, beater bar side up. The base plate has to come off; it is held on with either screws or clips or a combination of both. Once the base plate is off, you'll need to carefully remove the beater bar, paying close attention as to how the end pieces come out with the beater bar from the vacuum frame. They have to mate back up in the same way they come out. Also note where the belt will ride on the beater bar. While you have it torn down this far, clean the suction cavity as vacuums usually plug up in this area, and remove any hair, ribbons, thread and the like that has gotten wound around the beater bar. Slip your belt over the motor shaft and then slip the beater bar into the belt. It'll feel like you need another pair of hands, but it can be done. Slip the beater bar and sockets back into the vacuum frame, and look again to make sure that the ends are seated properly. Test your work by revolving the belt a bit by hand, feeling for the resistance of the belt and smooth operation. Reinstall the base plate. That ought'a 'bout do it!
Best regards, --W/D--

Connecting hoses on Kirby G4

The hose attaches in place of the beater-bar head unit. To remove the head unit, lift the headlight assembly, then turn the square gray Kirby emblem counter-clockwise 3/4 of the way around until the red triangle on the square portion aligns with the red triangle on the base unit (this disengages the belt). Then flip the silver metal fastener that was underneath the headlight to release the head unit and remove the head unit. To attach the hose, simply line it up so that the safety button is engaged by the hose assembly and then use the metal fastener under the headlight to secure the hose to the base unit.

Belt burning

the beater bar probably needs to be removed & cleaned. the shaft & bearings get bound up with hair, string, etc.. with the belt off the bar, it should spin fairly easily. if it's hard to turn,(belt off) then it's bound up.
