Western Digital 40 GB USB 2.0 External Drive

By Horner - usenet poster

Trying to get this drive work using Win 98SE. Downloaded a supposed to be
driver file from Western Digital. Windows explorer shows it loaded. The WD
drive does not show up in Windows Explorer. When I hooked the drive to Win
98 Compt if found new hardware and asked for driver location but it could no
be found. Called WD and they said it was a Microsoft problem. Went to
Microsoft support but found no help. Any help w/b appreciated.
WD specs shows this drive to be applicable to Win XP Home Edition and Win
98SE.

Windows 98 did not natively support USB2. To use USB 2, you need a motherboard that has this built in, in which case your motherboard manufacturer would provide the drivers, or you need an add-in card (which would come with drivers).

Windows 98 SE supported USB1 (not too efficiently)
if one's motherboard supported USB (rare in those
days) as my old Sony did. The only USB1 device
I used on the Sony was the keyboard.

USB2 wasn't on the drawing board in Windows
98 days. I'd try to swap USB2 drive for an
equivalent IDE drive. You can probably get
a bigger drive for the same or less money,
and it should work fine. Try to get a 7200
RPM drive. I am running an 80 GB 7200
EIDE drive, and a 60 GB 7200 EIDE drive.
I'm satisfied with their performance. I have the
capability to use USB2 drives but they
aren't worth the extra investment IMHO.
