HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N ATA Not Working

I have a Toshiba Satellite A135-S2276 Laptop with a DVD ReWritable disk drive (HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N ATA Device) running under the vista os that keeps disappearing. When it disappears I check the device manager properties page and it disappears from that page also. Then I restart the computer then it reappears for a lil while and then disappears again. I even tried a complete restore on the os and it does not fix the problem. It is intermitently off and on(after retart). It of course stayed on and read the restore disk to do a complete restore but it wont stay on for anything else. I tried to do this: Locate, and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} but it has no UpperFilters and LowerFilters values (Even when the drive is working). So I dont know what else to do. Can somebody help please.
Thanks in Advance

Check the drive itself and see if it isn't loose in the carriage. Make sure the screw that holds it in place isnt loose or missing. Try this as a test: shut down the laptop. Press and hold the faceplate of the drive. While holding the faceplate, turn on the laptop. See if Windows detects the device again. If not (while still pressing on the faceplate) go to Device Manager and see if Windows sees the drive again.
The above trick you used is in case a CD burning program was improperly updated or uninstalled and it damaged the identifying drive filters. Each of those entries has more than one set of reg entries in the keyset. Make sure youre looking for the one for the CD/DVD drive. DO NOT DELETE entries for any other devices!!!

SOURCE: many the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL

Hi, I believe you are an experiencing an issue with the CD/DVD drive on your computer. In the registry the following subkey:- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}-upper filter/lower filters should not be present if they are present that would effect the functionality of the drive. Please check whether you are able to view the contents of the CD/DVD by going into computer right click on CD/DVD drive icon and then click on open and if you are able to view the contents of the DVD/CD then the drive is working fine and please try the following steps:- One of these may help:
1. Download, and run Restore Missing CD Drive patch
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
2. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.
Incase this doesn't work please perform the below menioned step:- Go Start>Run ("Start Search" in Vista), type in:
sfc /scannow
Click OK (hold CTRL, and SHIFT, hit Enter in Vista).
Have Windows CD/DVD handy.
If System File Checker (sfc) will find any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD (rarely in Vista case).
If sfc won't find any errors in Windows XP, it'll simply quit, without any message.
Thank you for your patience and best wishes for your effort.

backup whatever information you have and run the system recovery through the disks you received when you purchased the computer. If you can perform the recovery then you know the hardware is fine and that you were experiencing software corruption.

The driver can be downloaded from HP's website under Drivers and Support. Unfourtunatly corrupt registry entries are really hard to work with. I do not know any other way then to reinstall the software and hope for the best.

HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4082N. Can not write to DVD

The DVD -R +R means that you can read these types of DVDs that have been created elsewhere, it doesn't mean you can write to your DVD under the format of -R or +R. The CD is a CDRW which means you can read and write to CDs.

I don't think that a factory Satellite P100 has the ability to write to either DVD -R or +R, but to only CDs. I have a P200 that has a DVD -R +R/CDRW and it can't write DVDs. These DVDs you put in are for read only. My Toshiba A215 can but it's a DVDRW/CDRW.

Go back to the device in device manager, right click on it and select properties, then under the driver tab click on "Roll back driver" button and see if that does the trick.
