The line could be caused by contamination on the black laser lens. Try using the cleaning wand located in the front door to clean the lens. You will need to remove the waste toner container to access the wand slots. If that does not solve the problem, the black developer housing may need to be replaced. On the MP830 locate the "settings" button (top right of the cursor circle and left of the 1 key).
Press "settings" This should give you the "Print Quality" settings page on the LED Locate the 3rd field down which probably says "Fast", change this to "Standard" Press the "settings" button again to register the change.
Also possible that your contrast is causing problems... Check to see where the red bar is in the gradient (white to black line) under the "Copies" field on the LED in copy mode. If it's way over to the left that would also explain some of the problem.
Pressing the right arrow key on the circle controller will increase contrast although I'm not sure if it will retain this setting.
