If your using the Instant DVD recorder make sure in the step number 1 the dazzle is selected not pinnacle file capture.

In the step number 2 select burner make sure hard disk folder is selected then click the browse button this will allow you to save the video into your hard drive in different locations

How can I delete data from the hard drive of 'first alert' camera surveillance DVR?

Surveillance DVRs write over the oldest data when the hard drive needs more space.

You do not need to manage that manually. It is all handled automatically by the operating system of the DVR.

Your problem lies in the hard drive. It no longer is booting the DVR. There is a partition on the drive that holds the operating system so it doesn't get overwritten when the drive fills up with video. You need to contact the manufacturer to get a new hard drive since the software to run the DVR is on the drive.

DVRs store files on either data tapes or on hard drives or on memory chips such as SD cards. If SD card then simply remove the card and plug into a computer where it will appear as a removable drive. If internal hard drive your DVR will be equipped with either a IEEE1394 mini socket or a USB mini socket. In either case plug the appropriate cable from your DVR to your computer where it will appear as an external removable drive. If you are talking about a proprietary DVR such as a Foxtel IQ or other brand name DVR then you have to know the format of the video files. Foxtel, for example, uses their own format which can be recovered and saved to an external hard drive on a computer using a video capture card and playing the file back in real time. Time consuming, but that's how I do that. Other branded DVRs use standard video file formats that can be copied to your computer easily via an HDMI socket or USB3 or whatever it has.

Is there anyway to get recorded shows back that were accidently deleted?

Hey there, Cheri Torres with DISH Network Customer Service here. There is unfortunately not any way to get recorded shows that have been accidentally deleted. What you can do for next time is connect an external hard drive to your receiver. The external hard drive will need to be a minimum size of 50gb and maximum size of 2tb for DVR receivers and minimum 50gb and maximum 1tb for non DVR receivers. This will save all recorded shows in case anything should happen to your DVR receiver. I hope you find this information useful and if you have any further questions or concerns feel free to email me directly at Cheri.Torres@Dishnetwork.com.
