Scanner rail stops on return pass and makes a horrible sound wont

Scanner rail stops on return pass and makes a horrible sound, wont do anything until you unplug for a minute but then does the same thing. Screen say's unable to scan copy or send a fax. I paid $500 for this thing when it first came out, seems a waste to throw it out and HP was no help. Mine is doing the same thing. I expanded the silver spring on the left (to end of shaft). That did not solve it but made belt tighter some. Then I drilled hole and used tie wrap to tighten the holder under the carriage, ie to squeeze belt into cartridge. That did not help. Yours is doing same darn things as mine. I lost as to what to do next. Did you fix yours? Steve Fisher South Carolina 864-718-8309

I'm can't see any bad gears and belt is in tact and not damaged. It does not show any signs of wear. Mine only does it in fax mode when it tried to run back to the right. Maybe you and me can figure this out and save some money. Call me if you want. Steve

Try resetting your printer: start>control panel>performance and maintenance>administrative tools>services> scroll down to print spooler, click on it and then in the upper left hand corner you will see restart. Click here. This fixes all kinds of printer problems, hope it works for you.

Scanner mechanism stuck, making loud clicking sound

I've just got this problem after a powercut, whilst it was not being used but on. If you have only had it a few months send it in warranty.
Think I will have to take this apart and see if the scanner cable/ribbon/drive belt is caught on something or been stretched too much and can be replaced at all.
Its like at one end its caught and wont move the scanning head being stuck somehow, caught on something (doubtful tho').

The Sharp AL-1540CS copier produced a sheet all black then gave the error code L-1. The manual said to ''unlock'' the scan head lock, but after looking, it was already unlocked. After restarting the...

L1 or L1-00 indicates Scanner movement failure. The scanner is the part under the glass that lights up and moves back and forth. So if you lift up the feeder so you can see the glass, turn the machine off for a few seconds then back on. Watch the movement of the scanner. It should move right and inch or two then back to the left. If all goes well the copier should come to ready. Lay a piece of paper on the glass and press the print button to watch the scanner movement. If it binds up or does not scan correctly there are 2 possibilities.
1) your scanner lock is engaged and is preventing the scanner from moving. Check the clear plastic dial located under the far left upper side of the copier, near where the paper exits the machine. Make sure it is in the unlocked position.
2) Your scanner rail is dirty and dry. This rail can be seen under the glass towards the back of the copier. The scanner rides on this rail. It is very common for these to get dirty and for the grease to dry up causing the scanner to freeze up on the rail. The glass must be removed and the rail cleaned and lubricated.
Just power off then on the copier to reset.

Scanner makes a horrible noise until it goes into error state

Sounds like the scanner portion of your all-in-one is bad, best thing to do if its still under warranty is to call HP Tech Support and have them verify the issue: 800-474-6836

If its not under warranty then the machine is done.

Is your lock/unlock mechinism underneath in the unlock position?
I have a scanmaker 4800 and am assuming ours have basic similarities.
Mine has 2 round magnets that are visible when the glass is removed.
Once they fell out of place when I took it apart and I had to reglue them in. Is anything in the pathway of your carriage rail?(I don't know what else to call it) but a little wheel on the right side slides up and down this rail and maybe one of those little round magnets fell out and is blocking it.

Fuser problem?

If the fuser lamp is gone faulty the machine will return a fuser error code and wont print, but it will still start loading the paper and shouldn't make any weird sound (the fuser is just an heating lamp). I think in your case the problem is probably caused by the plastic fused inside printer's mechanics. The solution is disassembling the printer, cleaning any plastic residue from the inside, and then mounting the printer back. If done properly this may solve the problem.
