The relay mounts on the compressor and has a sliding start switch inside it. If you shake it you should feel the sliding switch within it. I fyou hear nothing or it sounds like a salt shake then it is bad. Newer relays have no way of telling other than you can visably see the relay is burned and can smell it as well. If your compressor is hot as the devil then the relay is stuck in start and both windings are going at once. This will cause the overload to trip and kill the compressor till it cools back down. otherwise the compressor will cool the box albeit intermittantly. If the contacts are disentergraded within the relay the compressor will not run.

Refrigerator and freezer compressor is not running

Compressor starts and then stops.....I hear a clicking noise
I wish I had a dime for every time I heard the statement above made.
Before going into the issue we must first understand just what a compressor does and where it is located. The compressor is located (in most instances) on the lower backside of the unit. The side that is against the wall. It is behind either a cover made of cardboard or metal panel.
The compressor compresses the Freon to a gas which is then circulated through the evaporator coils
Which are located inside of your freezer section . Note the over load and relay location on the picture above.
There are three components....relay/overload/and the capacitor. This subject here is for the relay and overload. They are 95% of the time responsible for the compressor not running. Without them, the compressor will try to start and at times will run for a short amount of time. The customers complaint is usually both my freezer and refrigerator are warm. They also state ,"I hear the compressor turning on but it will shut off after a minute or two" and " I also hear a clicking noise"
The clicking sound is coming from the relay. The contacts have broken inside and they are not allowing the compressor to start. Note the location of the relay and overload on the compressor. The compressor has three prongs pertruding from the side that the relay and overload are plugged into. Simply pull them off the compressor and shake them. If they are bad you will hear a rattle sound coming from them.
When ordering your new relay and overload you will need the complete model number to ensure the proper part. See my tips and how to's at the bottom of this procedure for the link to find your model number. Here are just a few styles of overloads and relays.

How to find appliance model numbers When trying to troubleshoot or purchasing parts for your appliance the model number is the key to do

What rewiring is needed to replace the overload relay with a universal kit, on an upright freezer? Kelvinator model VA16 W. There are two relays that connect to the compressor that need to be replaced....

The two pieces are Relay and Overload.

If you are using a supco relay/overload combination that has three wires with terminals and two wires with stripped ends the wiring is as such.

Red-Run Terminal, White-Start Terminal, Black-Common Terminal (Overload was wired to this)

Stripped wires are connected to line cord along with condenser fan wires.

I hear buzzing sound and a click like a switch when the compressure turns on.

Then you will need to get that fixed. Sounds to me that your start relay and start capacitor are not making good start connection and the overload is clicking out. If you don't fix this problem soon the compressor may be damaged. I need to know if your model is the MSD2756G or a different model. Let me know..Sea Breeze

Compressor not running

This is the overload/relay assembly. Although a burned up overload can sometimes indicated a defective compressor, in most cases you can fix the problem by replaceing the overload/relay.

Refrigertor cycle rapidly

2109, start with the overload and relay on the compressor, see if it's contained in a white box. Take it off and shake it, see if it rattles. If so, that's probably the problem. If you find the overload and relay good, the compressor may be bad, the good news is that is covered by warranty for 5 years, parts and labor. The overload and relay will not be covered under warranty, could be expensive if an outside service does the job. Part number for the relay/overload, 4387938. back.
