Not sure what machine you have. Sounds like there's so much force from the pressure foot that the feed dogs can't advance the material. Can you reduce the tension on the presser foot incrementally? If not, try releasing the presser foot but keep some tension on it manually.

SOURCE: sewing machine motor will not run after attempting

Overload Viking:
The machine has a built in overload protector, if your needle can’t penetrate, it may stop the machine from working for a few minutes. Just wait it will reset automatically. Then, try a Sharp needle (denim needle is ideal) and be sure to Never Never reverse sew on heavy fabric, your needle will bend and hit the needle plate, use the FIX button for knotting (it really does work).

SOURCE: sewing heavy fabric

First thing is pin the heck out of it. I would not use a needle bigger than a 16. Set the tension midway and then just tweak it one way then the other to get a smooth stitch. And for your thread, just use polywrapped cotton thread and you should be fine.

SOURCE: I am sewing upholstry fabric together in a pillow

Hi. Unthread and rethread everything, clean out any lint, and oil the machine. This, plus using the right size needle (size 16 or higher) and thread (heavy duty), should do the trick.

Let me know if this solves the problem, ok?

Good luck!

Machine does not sew through heavy fabric. Could it need a new belt?

How heavy? A domestic machine is intended to sew only certain weights of fabric. That's why industrial machines were invented. For one thing, you could be damaging the motor which is not built to handle heavier fabrics. You can try a brand new sharp needle--like for leather. But if your machine is struggling, you probably need to find another way of stitching your project.

WHAT NUMBER NEEDLE DO I NEEDLE FOR SINGER 5838C

According to this manual, it takes Singer needles which are probably 130/705 type:

http://homeappliance.manualsonline.com/manuals/mfg/singer/5838.html

Singer enthusiasts generally recommend using Singer needles, however, other sewists will use other brands as long as they are the same type. As for the needle size and the point, that depends on the fabric you are stitching.

My janome 9000 sewing machine has stopped working 3 times when I sewed over heavy material. What s wrong with machine.

Did you take it for service? If so, the technician should be able to tell you what was wrong and what probably caused it.

If you didn't take it for service, how were you able to get it to sew again? Could be the fabric was too heavy for the needle and caused the needle to bend. It could be knocking your machine out of time. Be sure to use a heavy needle like a #16 or #18 (and for most fabrics try a "sharp" like microtex, top stitch, leather needle) and sew slowly with heavy fabric. Perhaps the fabric is too heavy for your sewing machine. I sew heavy fabric like vinyl, canvas, etc but I use an old metal mechanical machine that I can help along by turning the handwheel when the going gets tough.

Is pfaff hobbymatic a heavy duty machine?

The term "heavy duty" sewing machine is thrown about loosely lately. There are new machines (including Pfaff, Singer, etc) for sale advertised as "heavy duty," but I would be hesitant to stitch denim jean hems on them. The Pfaff 807, which appears to be an older mechanical, is probably more "heavy duty" than some newer machines on the market. However, "heavy duty" does not mean that you can sew big canvas sailcloth or heavy upholstery projects. A domestic machine (which the Pfaff 807 is) is really meant for general domestic sewing. If you want to sew "heavy duty" fabric, then look to an industrial machine. Remember that frequent sewing of heavy fabric takes a toll on a domestic machine, ie the motor, needlebar, other working parts, thus hastening the demise of your machine and the more frequent need for service & repair.

How do I add knit band to pajama pant on McCalls pattern 7975. I have lost the directions.

Usually the cuff ribbing is cut double the required length plus doubled seam allowances (ie 3" x 2 = 6; add two 5/8" for seams = 1.25"'; equals 7.25" long). It is doubled so when it is folded in half and stitched to the leg, there will be no seams showing outside). The width of the ribbing is probably an inch or so shorter than the leg bottom--it should be large enough for the foot to fit through but tight enough that it hugs (not squeezes) the leg.

Sew the cuff together lengthwise to make a circle. Fold it in half with the stitched seam inside. Then fold the circle widthwise with the seamline at one end. Mark the halfway point opposite the seamline. Then fold in half again with the seamline and the first pin matching together. Mark the other two ends. You've divided it into equal fourths. Repeat the same procedure marking the pajama leg in fourths. Then match the seamline of the ribbing to the seamline of the leg (right sides together). Match the other three marks on the cuff to the three marks on the pajama leg bottom. You'll have the stretch the ribbing because it should be a bit smaller in circumference than the leg bottom. Stretch the ribbing to match the leg bottom and stitch the ribbing and leg bottoms together. Turn right side out.

My Fashion Mate 6160 beeped and stopped sewing & automatic threader doesnt work

if the machine still sews a straight stitch on top of fabric & also on bottom then it should be fine..
it's possible that the thick fabric, needle, & thread were not a compatable combination.
but also some sewing machine are not made to sew thick or heavy
fabric
but having the machine serviced would be a good idea & help to know why the needle thread is not working
