Factory fit stereo has poor radio reception

Hi,

I have a 2003 320d tourer with the original stereo head unit fitted.

I bought the car with an after amrket car kit fitted, which includes a replacement aerial.

The radio has difficulty tunning into any stations, if I am lucky to tune into a station the rds shows the channel name but will not retune if there is a frequency change.

What can solve the problem?

Can anyone help me to overcome this issue?

Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

    Thanks for the links.

    2 questions-

    1. How do I know if it has an aerial fitted in the rear window. All I can see is the rear demister, the same on the side windows.

    2. How do I remove the trim on the ceiling of the car?

    Cheers

does the car have the original rear window antenna and the previous owner installed the aerial?

if you have a rear window antenna (instead of using the aftermarket aerial), make sure the antenna amplifier is reconnected. see #2 in this pic:

    http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...

if it also has the side window antenna, then connections to this side window amp (#5 in the pic) should also be checked.

also, make sure the antenna cable is securely connected to not only the HU, which i am sure you did when you reinstalled the unit.

the car has the original radio unit installed or it was reinstalled after you bought it?

    who reinstalled the original unit?

difficulty tuning into FM stations only or does it do the same for AM stations too?

Was the aftermarket kit made in China? If so, that's probably your main problem!

SOURCE: 98 BMW M3 radio has poor or no reception

Check first the connection of the radio to the antenna... there is a cable that should go to the back of the radio. See if the cable insulation (the rubber like covering) has openings or the connection is loose before checking any of the devices that may boost the signal.

Procedures for changing the clock vary from model to model. Usually there is some button on the trip computer that you hold down until the display blinks.
Why not just look in the owners manual?

SOURCE: RDS reception with BMW Business radio

Well i remember the M25 being built so i wouldnt know about radio reception ,but i do remember radio london and caroline. Now i would imagine that this sort of auto reset of tuning reception is controled by a micro chip and this chip is now not working as it should so if you want it to work then its most likely cheaper to install a new radio.Or just use long wave for radio 4.

How do I fix poor radio recption on a 2012 Grand Vitara Urban fitted with Garmin sat nav/digital radio.

Poor reception and low volume of any radio is mostly caused by poor aerial performance.

If the aerial has been eliminated, the unit is properly grounded, has a good current and voltage supply and the loudspeakers and wiring have all been tested and found to be ok then the fault must be inside the radio.

In lots of parts of the world the ambient temperatures in the height of summer and the depths of winter can be outside the operating temperature range of the radio. It is not wise to switch on when these conditions exist as delicate electronics are easily damaged, especially when condensation might have formed on internal circuit boards.
My father once switched on his car radio after the car had been parked in the sun and something inside failed instantly. The repair guy said it was a common problem.

One further thought. Is the alternator overcharging; producing an excessive voltage that could damage the radio or alternatively is a loose supply or ground connection causing a strong surge current and inducing an excessive voltage in a nearby inductance...

Has anyone replaced the cd/radio head unit on a 2006 Mk2 Renault Megane and been able to retain the steering wheel controls and in-dash display using a non Renault radio? Pretoria/Centurion-S.A. area.

I have a 2004 Mk2 Scenic and when I bought it 18 months ago it was fitted with a non-Renault unit and that worked from the control stalks and showed up on the dash. I removed it and fitted the original unit back in as the previous owner wanted to keep the one that was fitted. I can't remember the make other than it was an expensive one. It was a straight un-plug the fitted unit and plug in the old one. No new wiring needed, so I am guessing that as long as you use the fitted plugs then the controls should still work. I hope that is of some help.

Cd player in toyota paseo

Very simple. DIN size head units fit without any adapters (assuming your car has the DIN size factory radio with pocket underneath {I have '93 Paseo and this was the setup of mine, though Crutchfield.com shows option of factory stereo with pocket and without [guessing there was a double DIN size option]}). All you need is a wiring harness. I've seen these anywhere from $5 - $20. This will connect to the wires on the harness for your new radio, then instead of cutting any of the factory wiring, you simply plug the factory harness into this new socket.

The trim ring around the radio/climate control/ashtray area is held in with clips. It just pops out (may have to use a thin screw driver to get your fingers under one of the edges to start). Four screws hold the metal frame where the head unit, climate control, and ashtray are. Take those out and pull the metal frame out a bit, then disconnect the wires of the climate control, power lead to lighter, and stereo harness and antenna. Two screws per side hold the stereo in to the metal frame. Take those out, slide out the factory radio and put in your new head unit (You will not use the metal cage or any other mounting brackets the head unit may come with). The holes on the metal frame should line up with mounting holes on the side of your new radio.

Not to endorse one vendor over another, but Crutchfield.com supplies instruction sheets and any needed install accessories free with purchase of new head unit. Their prices are often slightly higher than you can find elsewhere (comparable to retail stores, usually more than online stores), but you get the wiring harness and instruction sheets for your vehicle. At the very least, you can use their site to see what fits your vehicle (Note: Many other stores do this as well.)

How to replace radio with after market with easy and minimal cost

Hi Butoxige,
Thanks for your help... and sorry for my delayed reply to you I was away for a while.
This is an excellent information what I was looking for.
I do have couple of more questions, if you could provide more details this will help me further.
1. When we fix BeatSonic radio - will it be able to connect with steering wheel controls - volume etc
2. Afetrmarket radios will have inbuild amp which will bypass factory amp is suppose but would it improve the sound without changing the factory speakers or you may suggest for new speakers as well

Once again thanks for your help.

99 stereo out of a 99 CARAVAN

Hello,
Unfortunately you cannot hook this stereo up with out the original plug that fits into the stereo unit. Once you have that then you could buy an wiring adapter that will break out the wires out of the original harness with labeled wires and you can just match them up and tape them together.
Good Luck
