Question about HP Pavilion dv5215 Notebook

1 Answer

HP Pavilion dv5215 PC Notebook running very slow, but virus scans are clean as are spyware/adware. backed up 80 gb HD to 500 GB external HD and it took 36 hrs. everything is slow; bootup, going to apps, loading a browser and the cursor sometimes seems to have a mind of it's own. I'm just before pulling the recovery disks out and re-imaging the HD. Any ideas?

downloaded Malware Bytes as you said and scanned the computer. After taking 24+ hours to scan a 80 GB HD, I found 6 infections of the Rogue Assertive family. Deleted them and also ran Registry winner software and fixed 1500 registry errors. But computer still runs in slow motion with it taking minutes not seconds to boot up, load apps or begin to print. Also cursor is slugish. I have the recovery disks I created when I bought to re-image the HD as a last resort. Any more ideas?

What did you scan the system with?

I would download, install and scan with Malware Bytes just to make sure the system is clean. If there's anything on that machine MB will find it and kill it.

Post back with your results and we'll explore additional possibilities if your PC is indeed totally clean.

It sounds as if your OS platform may have been corrupted to a point where your performance will never be the same doing only repair procedures, A fresh restore would most likely be the best solution.

I will usually recommend the scan & clean as the first resort just to see if the existing platform can be cleaned sufficiently to operate but it sounds like this isn't one of those cases.

My laptop is very slow and not fully protected. I just upgraded my memory chip up to max. 1.5 GB but nothing changes?

run a scan for adware and spyware. You can also try Soluto

Soluto tracks your boot time and gives you the break down on what applications are causing hang ups-including grouping them into "No-Brainger" and "Potentially Removable" groups for easy weeding.

Slow start home edition of xp

I take it you mean that it started up faster before now?

Some things that can slow it down:
1) run scandisk
2) run defrag
3) run the command msconfig from the Start>run command
Remove unnecessary programs from the startup tab. This doesn't uninstall the programs, just tells them not to start. You may have spyware and adware running.
4) run a good malware detection program and scan for viruses.
5) Install more memory. In the beginning, many companies put 512 MB RAM in the XP machines. You need at least 1 GB of RAM to run smoothly and 2GB for best performance.

It could be a virus or some spyware/adware slowing down your system, or it could simply be that your system needs to be cleaned.
Run some general maintenance, including :-
A virus scan,
An spyware/adware scan,
Defragment your drives,
Restrict programs that load at boot-up and reside in your system tray.
& clear your temp directory's out as well.

At the very least, this should help with the problem.
