Question about Dell Latitude D600 Notebook

1 Answer

Display problems I have a Dell Latitude D600. The display has allot of lines and is patchy and the mouse has a ghost about 4 inch's to the right of the pointer. also the setup screen is not readable..I mean it is all garbled and not anything I can read. the numbers are ok but the letters are all messed up. I have updated the Readon driver and even reformatted the thing and re-loaded everything. the machine works...only problem is the diaplay issue. it is set to 1024X768 32bit. and it also looks the same on an external monitor. I suspect the video chip is trashed but I am not sure. what do you think.

Sounds like a fried video chip. I believe it's soldered onto the motherboard so if it is fried you would have to get a new motherboard. Part can be found here - http://www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=2739

You could probably take the part to any computer repair shop and they should be able to install it.

I've connected my Dell Latitude D600 to my Sony 50" LCD TV. I get a blue screen< and I belive the connection is right. What settings should I make in "Display" on my laptop? Thanx

In the display the tv should appear as the second monitor - set the resolution to the native resolution of the tv (most likely 1920x1080), make sure the Extend.. option is ticked and Make this... option is unticked and Apply.
Now all you have to do to use it is to drag the window of whatever do you want to watch to it. Remember to drag it back to the laptop display before closing it or the next time you open it you will not see it.

Dell latitude D600 display blacks out, showing just a ghost image

Connect an external monitor to your laptop and power it up, if you see the normal Windows images then the video card and laptop is OK and the problem is the backlight.

If you see a very dim image or flicking image on the LCD screen it means you have a backlight problem.

Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight and it could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out or burnt out, most likely this is the case.
The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills.

The flickering may not be caused by a corrupt driver, it could be the impending failure of the fluorescent back light of the display or its high voltage supply.

Trying driver replacement though is the first thing to try.
If the original driver is corrupt, you can try the following;

- Right-click on My Computer
- Left-click on Properties
- Click on Hardware tab
- Click on Device Manager
- Locate and open Display Adaptors
- Locate the video listing for your
- Highlight and delete this
- Reboot the computer

If Windows does what it should (no guarantee on this!), it will 'find' a 'new device' and install the driver for it.

Display not working properly

You should be able to plug in an external (Desktop type) monitor . Look for a connector on the side or back of the laptop. If the external monitor works, you have pretty much diagnosed that you have a LCD problem.
