Most likely your stylus (needle) is bent, broken or missing. Check to see if it's there or not. If it's broken or damaged, you will need to replace it. Under the cartridge, you should see a small arm that has the actual diamond on the end of it. If the arm is there, but the diamond is missing off the end, the arm won't stay in the groove and will instead skip across the record to the middle.

Hi. I have a technosonic kha712 model and my needle skips over the first 10-15 seconds of the first song on every record. Is this fixable?

You could try increasing the weight at the end of the turntable arm. It will be a question of trial and error. Trying a record to see if it stops, but putting to much weight will make the sound rumble.
First however check to see if there's something on the arm somewhere that makes the record jump. Could be anything: muck, a pin, or a wire.

My PL120 turntable purchase new skips often and will hardly work with music played at a loud volume

The first problem could be the stylus needs cleaning. Please shine some light on the stylus ( needle ) and see if it has picked up dirt from the record groove. This will prevent the stylus from tracking the song properly. Clean using a fine brush in the direction in which the stylus passes the record groove i.e from back of the pick up arm to front- NEVER SIDEWAYS.
Next check the counterweight adjustment at the back of the Pick up arm. The tracking force should be between 1.5 to 3 grams depending on the brand of the cartridge. What ever be the chosen weight the antiskating knob should also be set to the same number.
The skipping can also be because of heavy bass vibration traveling up the body of the Turntable.Good turntables have a floating suspension to prevent this. The tuntable platter will be suspended on springs. You can place it on a rubber Matt or move it away from the speakers ,esp: sub woofers.

Jensen JTA 450 turntable skips?

Try moving the arm up to the end of the vinyl, if it does go till the end of the vinyl then try adjusting your counter weights, a penny will do, if it doesn't go till the end of your vinyl then there's a mechanical problem check any obstruction at the botton of your arm.

My CDX05 kept skipping last night, it happened on 7 different CDs. The CDX was tilted up though, would this cause the problem?

If it was kept in a dusty place yes!
I would thus try cleaning the lens with a good CD lens cleaner product, that should get rid of any dust problem.

My sl-5 skips on records often, Could it be the stylus pressure? how do i adjust the pressure? I've seen that this is a common problem with this turntable. Also could f*%#ed up records be the reason for...

What brand TT? Technics?

This from the manual:

"Place the unit in a stable and horizontal position where there is little or no vibration."

"Place the unit away from the speakers so that it will be subject to as little direct sound radiation as possible."

and

"Adjust stylus pressure in the following cases:
Stylus pressure is normally set to to 1.25 g but may be raised or lowered by +-.25 g.
It may be necessary to increase stylus pressure when playing records cut at high levels, or when room temperature is low, or when the unit easily picks up external vibrations.

This will prevent distortion and groove-skipping. In such cases, turn the stylus pressure adjustment screw clcokwise (+), as indicated. (Fig. 12)

Note:
Do not turn the adjustment screw further than the set limits (1.5 g ~ 1.0 g)"

Only records 3 or 4 out of 10 songs

Please describe the exact model number and what it's doing wrong (skipping, I suspect). The tonearm setup is critical for proper tracking. Do it again with extreme care if mistracking is your problem.

I found one model online and a review with some sample of music. Quite interesting...

http://www.everythingusb.com/ion_ttusb10_usb_turntable_13231.html

The author complained about some things that clearly mark him as a stranger to finer turntables. Complaining about having to assemble and position the 'rubber band', aka the drivebelt, and the tonearm counterweight shows that he underestimates the precision required to for a mechanism to properly track the microscopic undulations of the groove without skipping into the air or gouging it to death.

Some basics when recording from a turntable...
1) Place the turntable as far from speakers as possible on a solid surface that you will not touch during the recording
2) Keep the volume low enough that airborne sounds don't cause mistracking of the stylus *
3) Avoid anything that will cause vibration or movement of the turntable.
* If you have a subwoofer, turn it off.

Some advice after reading the articel: don't try to save recording time by playing the discs at 45rpm. The best tracking of the disc and recording of the minute details in the grooves will be at the nativespeed of the recording. Digital manipulation later only gloms up the accuracy you probably want.

In general, the fewer the conversions steps in the analog domain, the better; and the fewer the bit rate conversions in the digital domain, the better.

Tone Arm skips past first song

Hello, A. Do not try to close the case when there is a record inside!! The fact that the turntable cannot do this is not a design flaw--you'll be hard pressed to find a portable turntable that can close with a record inside because if you were to pick up the player with one inside, it could easily slip off of the spindle and scratch against the sides of the player.
B. Are you using the cueing lever to lift the tone arm before you place it on the record? Read the instructions to see where the cuing lever is (it's a little switch on the right side of the tone arm). When you lift it, the tone arm will lift up and allow you to position it wherever you want on a record, then you depress the lever to make the tone arm touch the record and being playing.
I hope that helps!
