Question about BMW 1997-2001 Bmw 5 Series Radio/stereo Wire Harness Plug

GPS system turns off. Radio and CD player will also quit playing

I have removed and replaced the three (3) fuses that provide power and the system works for a short period of time and then goes off again.

I am able to play the radio by turning off the radio power and turning it back on again. It will play for about three (3) minutes and then quit playing again.

I seems like a bad breaker which would need to be replaced.

    My car is a BMW 2000 528i.

    Where is the circuit breaker?

  • Bernie Sanchez Mar 03, 2009

    2000 BMW 528i.

GPS computer turns off. This also affects the audio system which continues to play for a couple of minutes then also turns off.

I can continue to listen to the radio or cd player by pressing the on/off switch. Each time the radio will play for a couple of minutes then turn off.

I have removed and replace the three fuses which are listed for the system and the system then seems fine and works for a few days and the problem returns.

Sounds like a faulty radio module in the boot.
As you say you have nav, i am assuming you have the on-board monitor?
If so, the radio module is on the left hand side of the boot, behind the trim, you will have to remove the cd changer and nav unit to get at it though, it has a typical radio multi plug on the top of it.. try tapping it to see if anything happens when its on.
does your car have the amplifier as well? (HIFI system) - if it does this could be another possibility and it could work out difficult to tell which one is at fault;
the radio module will produce the sound output from the various source's i'e changer, nav, radio, then the amp unit will amplify the signal so its louder, and includes dsp functions.
This is not an external radio fault (fuse breaker, etc.) This is a thermal shutdown problem. A service call is going to be required to get your radio operational again.
It may be cheaper to install an aftermarket radio!!

Thanks for using FixYa - a FixYa rating is appreciated!!

It will need someone to look inside and take some measurements around the circuit board area. For example, if an electrolytic filter cap has shorted down it may be drawing excessive current and causing the problem. But, there are many other possibilities.as if the fuse is not holding the exact charge required this can happen.check out replacing the fuse with some higher voltage.for example if at present you r using 1v fuse check out with 2v fuse and check this also many times makes difference.

Load area 1 (trunk) fuse 56 this fuse also controls your stereo so if it's anti-theft make sure you have the code to activate it

Check the circuit breaker, and ensure this is not because of a bad power cable losing connectivity.

If the GPS and then the audio system are turning off in sequence that means that there is a short in whirings or an internal problem that cause the system going into protection mode.

Start checking the wiring and connectors to GPS and to audio system.

What do I need to do to get my cd player to work again?

CD players are notorios for missalignment of the laser, to fix them is quite costly and cheaper to replace the unit is usually the option. You can however buy a cleaner cd to run in the unit, ask a supplier where to get one. Good luck

Check you wiring. There are going to be 2 powers in the back of the radio. The yellow wire is the constan/memory wire. Make sure you have it hooked up to constant power.

Mitsubish 10 cd will not power off

You need to check both of the main power wires. The 12V constant is almost always yellow and fused, and this connects directly to the battery, and functions as a memory for time, radio presets, etc. The Red wire is the 12V switched, and it needs to be hooked to an accessory wire or the ignition wire, whichever your preference. The 12V swithced is the prompt for the radio to turn on and function, and if it is connected to the battery, the radio will never go off unless turned off physically.

It sounds as if the power leads are not connected properly.

Make sure the memory lead is connected to a constant 12+ volt source, and the switched lead is connected to a 12+ volt power source that is controlled by your ignition switch.

Cd wont eject

You are absolutely right about bose! And GM Delco as well. Try this. I've had 50/50 results. Need 2 peole. One at the nattery, the other at the cd player. Turn the key on, radio will power up. with the radi powered up,disconnect the negative battery cable from veicle. Wait a few minutes. Now this step might be cumbersome. While holding stereo in your hand, push the eject button and HOLD while the other person re-connects the negative power cable back up. Ths will do a reset on the stereo and you may get lucky!

Don't put anymore cd' in it. Your only other option if you want that CD bad enough is to disassemble the case of the stereo and manually move the mechanism to eject it. Hope this helps
