Replacing a PIX 515E with an ASA 5510

Best way to migrate is to take the configuration of the old PIX and TFTP it to a PC or other server for safe keeping.

Then boot up the ASA in a lab environment and TFTP the configuration to the new unit and reboot. There will be some commands that don't translate correctly, but you can compare the configurations to each other to make sure all the access lists and NAT statements get transferred across.

Keep in mind that the PIX and the ASA name their interfaces differently, so there may be errors when you transfer the configuration. You can edit the configuration offline with something like Notepad and change the names of the interfaces to have it work.

Good luck!

How to counfugre asa 5505 cisco Router

Use the Cisco ASDM or SDM software, that will give you an easy graphical interface to configure the ASA. One of them would have been shipped with the device.

Don't forget the ASA has to pre-configured, just a simple config. Have HTTPS enabled and telnet/SSH helps as well if you dont have a serial port or the console cable.

Cisco's website will give you quite a lot of info for free...

Site to site VPN between Checkpoint UTM 1 R62 and Cisco pix /Netscreen

I couple of points:

PIX has a few dislikes...

1. Pix does not like class A address, make sure you are using B or C.
2. The VPN subnet always has to be differant to the LAN.
3. Has to have a working DNS server.
4. Add static route, and last resort to main ethernet port that has the DNS & R62. (or 2 if on differant sub)

Hope this helps.

Upgrade firmware on a cisco ASA 5500 firewall

This is for the pixes, I haven't upgraded an asa yet...should be close or the same

* find latest version of code, these are usually *.bin files located on http://www.cisco.com/cgi-bin/tablebuild.pl/pix
* confirm the flash and RAM requirements of the PIX OS software versus what the PIX has (”sho ver”)
* make sure you have a backup of the old PIX OS and PDM to the tftp server (or at least confirm the software is there)
Note: You cannot back them up from the PIX, so you will need to download them and put them on the tftp server * put in a change control form
* once change controls confirms date/time do the upgrade:
wri mem*** only if you save your configs via tftp wri net conf t ca save all copy tftp://your tftp server ip/pix635.bin flash:imageskip this if you don't use pdm copy tftp://your tftp server ip/pdm-304.bin flash:pdm *** if this is a failover pair, upgrade the other pair reboot
