Lectro 411a level loss

By Beresford - usenet poster

I have been experiencing intermittent level loss on multiple
Lectrosonics 411a's. To fix this problem you have to go into the menu
to Level and just press the up or down button. Once you do this the
proper level reception returns. Why is this happening? This has
happened to me on more than a few different 411a receivers on
different shows I've worked on so I know it's not an isolated
incident. Luckily there is a quick fix that I've been able to use and
tell others experiencing the same problem, yet the problem is
persistent.

Any one else have this problem? Know how to fix it?

Update:
The unit that is here that we are are testing for this problem,
remains perfect even though it was dropped at some point and bent 6"
of the front panel out at 30 degree angle. We've run it hot and cold
and at very low power supply voltages. I will let you know if we find
anything

I've had the same issue happen to me also. It was during a reality gig
a few months ago (gear not provided by wexler) and we (5 sound guys)
were running 4 - 411a's in each of our bags. It seemed to affect 1 or
2 units out of the 16 we had, and because gear kept getting swapped
out, i don't think we managed to identify which exact units were the
culprits. But the remedy was as you described it, move the gain up or
down one notch, and the gain jumped back to the normal level.

I think i may have made a post here on ramps about the problem, now
that i think about it.

Thanks for your response Larry.
As to Scott Farr's comment, I have asked a few mixers about this and
they have experienced this also with receivers coming form different
rental houses so we can't pin this on Wexler. Plus the 411's I'm
using now did not come from there either.
I haven't tried to adjust the gain on the transmitter when this occurs
as I'm usually in scene when this occurs. When this has happened I
have always been using UM400 Transmitters.

I will keep you up to date with troubleshooting and reoccurrences of
the problem. I working with them now on a 4 week shoot.

Hi,
This is a new one on me. I asked Dean in service if he had run into
this. We have had two units do something like this over a 4-5 year
period of shipping 411's and 211's and in both cases it was a
defective digital pot. It seems very odd that you have had multiple
units doing this.

We can take a look at the unit(s) but problems that come and go are
usually gone when the unit gets here. I swear they know they are back
to the mother ship. If you can get it to happen again, don't touch the
menu but connect the UCR411 to a different device, or cables, etc.,
and then change the 411 menu levels up and down and see if you get the
same jump in signal. If the units are stable into different devices,
then try plugging and unplugging the UCR411 to see if that is the
"cure". You might also see if turning the 411 off and on cures it.

The more we know about how it fails, the better chance we have of
finding a strange problem. It is always possible that we built
multiple units wrong and they are all failing the same way but I
suspect some outside factor. It might be interesting to change the
gain of the outside device(s) that the 411's are feeding to see if a
change of level changes the signal. A sharp rap applied to the
unit(s), ours and others, might find something too.

Also, how often does this happen? And has anyone else in the group run
into it?
Best Regards,
Larry Fisher
