Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

GE Profile XL 1800 Microwave overheating?

Last week while cooking something on high for 12 minutes the microwave *died* at the end. No power, no lights...dead. I unplugged it when I noticed it felt very warm. The next day I plugged it back in and it reset, but now it makes a rattling/whining noise and still gets very warm so we are afraid to use it.

Does it need a new filter? Something more? Why is it whining?

What could it be?

Thanks

IT IS DEAD, NO TURNING ON ANYMORE

The magnetron probably overheated and caused
    the magnetron thermostat to open.
    Then when it cooled, it
closed the circuit and allowed power through again.

You first need to make sure that your internal cooling fan is running.

    When I say internal
cooling fan, I do not mean the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn
    on and off manually.

    I'm instead talking
about the internal fan which comes on automatically whenever you
    microwave.

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are operating here.

    It is vital that the
cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be destroyed.

In some cases, the cooling fan's blade will become loose on the motor shaft so that even though the motor is running, the fan is not blowing.

    At
our Web site, we have a video
available showing how to remove a typical
over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Once you look this over, let us know what you find and we'll take it form there.

How do I set the power at 50%?

After first setting the cook time---then hit the power level button and hit the number 5 (for 50%) and then start. Power level can also be changed while running by hitting power level button and selecting 1 through 10. For example level 3 is 30% for defrosting.

I have a microwave GE spacemaker XL 1800 that stopped working. None of the touch control panel buttons work. Is like death. Is it a fuse? if so how expensive is it?

probably fryed the magnetron, with something like foil or metallic, try unplugging it for 12 hours maybe it will reset if not throw it out

My GE 1800 microwave turntable has stopped turning

There is a motor underneath the microwave that rotates the turntable. The motor may not be getting power or the motor may have failed.

The magnetron tube may have died. Not worth repairing unless under warranty.

A key question is does the light and turntable inside operate--if they do suspect a bad diode used in many models, a inverter board (power for cooking) and or the major part a Magnetron.
12_11_2012_3_01_03_pm.jpgTypical diode used in microwaves---it should not read shorted from one end to the other.

12_11_2012_3_02_24_pm.jpgTypical Magnetron--can look fine and not a real way except by replacing to know if good or bad.

The inverter board if there will connect to the above part in some way directly.

It sounds like the main transformer has failed. It would be cheaper to replace the whole microwave than repair this one. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Spacemaker (JVM1871SK) 1800 Microwave doesn't microwave

Remove the case and see if you can localize the smell. Likely suspects are a shorted high voltage diode (replace) or a shorted stirrer bearing (replace stirrer)--a fan-like device located within the sheet metal waveguide near where the microwaves enter the cooking cavity. Make sure to have a cup of cold water in the cooking cavity when looking for problems. The problem could also be the high voltage transformer or the high voltage capacitor, but these are more rare problems. There are no radiation problems with the case off, but there are high voltages associated with the magnetron and it's power supply.

We have a GE Profile Spacemaker XL 1800. It began making a laboring noise and stopped cooking at the same time.

Sounds like the Magnatron or the HV Cap or diode is failed. Process of will show you which one. Very dangerous area to work in, not for the untrained. Eric
