Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

Your mouse is creating problem.
Change your mouse or fix it by reinstalling the plug
If problem still persist press frequently on the middle button of your mouse.

Why can I not erase background in my photo?

You can... Create a new white layer. Move the original photo layer to the top. just use eraser, or a combination of select area + delete.

The mouse pointer will randomly shoot to the edges of the screen, making it difficult to use and almost impossible to play video games... I'm using a 2006 Macbook pro with version 10.5.8 osX

I've always had this problem with using optical mice on high-gloss surfaces. My fix is to use a sheet of paper (not glossy photo or magazine paper, of course) or other flat surface for a mouse pad if I must work on a shiny table.

At the bottom of Macally's web page for the dotMouse is the following information:

"* optical sensored DotMouse functions best on surfaces with details for tracking (e.g., wood, plastic, cloth etc.)
It may not function on reflective, repetitive pattern or non-visible detail surfaces (e.g., glass)."

If this is not your issue, try dampening a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol and using it to gently wipe off the lens on the bottom of the mouse. Maybe there's some lint in there that waves around as you move the mouse and generates spurious movement information.

I'm scanning forty year old slides. Some of them are dense. If there is a light or white object in the photo, it scans with quite a big halo around it. I have a Mac and am using Nikon Scan 4.0.0.0...

well my bet would be for you to get photo shop or corel draw it will let you retouch the photos and also clone some areas that are lost think about it might be a good investment for you if the shots mean a lot to you.

warning : dont get the cheaper versions they lead you on and then you find out you cant convert photos to jpeg. so do your research first

Conversion of a coloured photo into B and W sketch

Many photo editing programs can apply "effects", such as sepia, "stained glass", water color etc. See if the editing programs you have access to can create this effect.

Programs such as Adobe Fireworks or Photoshop have these capabilities.

Perhaps just turning off the color will give you what you're looking for, but you may lose the detail in your photo.

Check with your University IT department to see what photo editing software is supported, or talk to someone in the Art department.
