I lost and cannot remember the code number I must use when I am away from my home, in order to retrieve recorded phone messages from my home phone (a lucent At&T 1872 Corded Phone).
Can I use a new code number, and if so, how do I do it ?

Re: Lost code number needed to retrieve messages
This is from the manual and you have to reset it from the actual base so if you are away from home now you cannot change it
REMOTE ACCESS CODE
The Remote Access Code is preset to 500.
To review or change the code (at home)
1 Press F until the screen displays
the current Remote Access Code.
2 Use the number keys to enter a new code
(between 500 and 999, except the current
Priority Calling Code).
3 Press S when you are finished.
now here is the link to the manual http://telephones.att.com/docMgt/public/art/175/1872_manual.pdf

Since you declined to specify the model of your Uniden DECT system, select it from the list beginning at
http://www.uniden.com/owners-manuals/dect-phones/scat/dectphones_mnl/ to download a copy of the manual.
Go to the base unit.
scroll to the answering machine option.
Under there is a setting for your security key.
you can read what's there, or change it to your own two digit code.
when you call in, during the message, enter that two digit code and it'll go into messages. There's a "toll saver" mode so that the machine answers after two rings instead of 4, so that if you call and it rings 3 times, you know there's no new messages.
Call your phone from a touch tone phone. Enter your remote code (11, or whatever you set it to) during the greeting message. The number of new messages will be heard, and the new messages will be played.
this instruction may help you , if not a model number could help , but try these instructions . thanks
To operate from a remote location, use any touch-tone telephone, and follow these steps: Call your telephone number and wait for the answering machine to answer. If the answering machine is off, it will answer after about 10 rings and series of beeping sounds. During the greeting message (or a series of beeps when the answering machine is off), press and enter your PIN code within 2 seconds (see "Setting a Security Code or Personal Identification Number (PIN)" on page 57). The answering machine announces the current time and the number of messages stored in memory. You hear "To play incoming messages, press zero-two. For help, press one-zero." You will hear a beep. Enter a remote command within 15 seconds, each command there after must be entered within 2 seconds. You may select a command from the following chart: Remote Commands
