Hi Mark, welcome to FixYa.

The problem your having is that sand and/or dirt gets in the lens mechanism of the camera. When the little cog inside gets sand or dirt in it, it prevents it from moving. It is what causes 95 percent of all lens errors. This is how you can fix it.
Take an air compressor (or borrow a friends) and put the nozzle up to the space in between the lens and and the camera. Blow it out real good. It may take a couple of tries, but it should free it up.

Let me know if that helped, and feel free to rate my answer.

Sounds like your guide pins are out of alignment. Probably happened when you "made it open". - Ok, rubberducky, this is what you do. Get a good hold on the lens and turn the camera on. While it's trying to power up, pull and twist on the lens. - What your trying to do is realign the guide pins back into their tracks. When this happens, it will make a click. Don't be afraid to reef on it good, but not so hard you pull it off. - If you hear the click...stop twisting, your there.

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...Here are some troubleshooting steps that you can try that may (or may not) correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty (or repair cost approaches that of the camera), they're worth that try. Some of the later steps do involve some risk to the camera, so carefully weigh your options before deciding to conduct them:

Turns on then shuts down automatically

As long as the battery is fine - try taking out the memory card and turning it on maybe? Sorry, but the lens are probably broken. Does it give an error message?

Lens Error

I solved the problem with a recommendation Rob posted here on FixYa. Some air pressure blown around the lens and it worked. Thanks, Rob. You're my hero! I almost sent the camera in for repair.

"lens error" on casio ex-z3

Sorry to say but a lens error actually is a problem that you cannot fix at home. When a lens error occurs, the motors inside that make the lens retract and protract were some how damaged, usually caused if the lens try coming out when you have it in your pocket or against a surface so it cant fully come out. You will have to send the camera in for service and you can do that by calling 1-800-706-2534, option 1.
