Question about Canon IXUS 80 IS Digital Camera

E 18 problem

The lens on my Canon digital camera will not close... i am unable to take a pciture and do not know the reason for this....when the camera is put on i am able to see my old pictures but when i click to take a new picture the screen is blank..i dont know what to do...please help...i have the canon power shot sd 500 camera and the problem that appears is the E18...... please help me Had the same "lens error, restart camera" with our Ixus 80 IS. Only one week old! Turns out there was sand (and a lot if it!) inside the camera (was used for taking pictures on a windy construction site). This sand had also made its way into the gear box. The solutions on this site helped me in determining the problem. The beneath mentioned PDF with photos was clearifying, although our camera's inside was somewhat different. By fully disassembling the gear box, cleaning each individual gear and using a can of compressed air to get rid of the remaining sand inside, I was able to make the camera work again. Thanx for the posted solutions! Marty

Your first problem sounds like a defective CCD imager. If your camera was an S300 Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. Please check the following two links for more info:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/11/canon-digital-cameras-showing-black.html
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=PgComSmModDisplayAct&fcategoryid=225&modelid=13390&keycode=2112&id=29819
Applicable cameras include:
A40, A60, A70, A75, A80, A85, A95, A300, A310, S1 IS, S60, S200, S230, S330, S400, S410, S500, SD100, SD110

Unfortunately, you mention that your camera is an SD300. That model camera is not currently on the recall list. But you might want to call Canon anyways. You might get lucky as the problem sure sounds familiar to the recall (excuse me, advisory hehehe).

As for the SD500 with the E18 error, try http://www.e18error.com/repair.html

Hi,
The dreaded E18 error happens to many Canon cameras.
This error occurs when the lens is mechanically stuck. Sometimes you need it to be serviced and most times you can fix it, but even then it's a good idea to have it serviced soon. The cause to this may be dust, dropping and other mechanical problems.
1. Check if the battery is full
2. Check for visible mechanical problems (obstacles, debris). You may notice the lens is not exactly straight - in this case this is the cause of the problem.
3. Turn the camera off.
4. This needs to be done with gentle force: Take the camera in one hand and with the other gently take each part of the lens and gently move it round in a circular movement. Do this with both sections of the lens. You will hear a little "click" as it pops back in place.
5. Power the camera on.

Hope this helps!

go to fotogeeks.com (I think it is) I only saw it this morning a full photo layout of how to get to the lens and clean up the parts involved, might take some time but would be worth fixing. If you don't find it let me know

Lens errors (E18 errors on Canons) are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ...

Here's some things that you can do to try to correct it. They only seem to work for less than 50% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try:

the E18 means the lens system has a problem. I had it with my S2 and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Eventually it stopped working. The only solution was sending it to repair, they changed the lens system.

Best Regards
