Try disabling the firewall and connecting, albeit it's a longshot, it was the solution when I have set up wirless to a friend of mine. After the first established connection I've enabled back the FW and it works great.

Also, do you use the internal windows networking wizard to connect or some software provided by the wireless card manufacturer?

Have you correctly typed the code?

Do you have some firewall installed on Vista laptop?

SOURCE: Wireless device disappeared with Windows Vista installation

Unfortunately, you have mentioned the router, which is no longer supported on the Dell site, but not the network card you are trying to use, please advise so as we can try for a driver. I assume you have tried installing the XP driver, as sometimes this may or may not work.

SOURCE: Connecting to a netgear DG834G with vista

Is this for wireless?

Go to Network and sharing center first then delete all netowrks under manage wireless network. then go to " connect to a network" and if able to see your network there then click conenct then type in wep key.

it is important also to make sure if the router still retain the same wep key you have now.

if this is not for wireless PC who is your internet service povider? is it cable? the authentication for cable is the mac address of the Main Pc which i believe in your case is the xp computer's  Mac adress.

try checking your device (router) because there are routers that are not compatible with Vista.

SOURCE: Thomson TG 585 v7 Wireless Problem

HI
The following info. might help you fixing the above problem:

For WIRELESS CONNECTION follow these Steps:
(Note: Keep the Ethernet cable plugged in unless we set up
WIRELESS)
1: Click on Home Network
2: Wlan
Click on Configure which is the 3rd last icon on the Top
Make sure that the option-Interface Enabled is ticked.
Channel selection should be ob Manuall.
Wireless channel can be 11( thats what is in my case).
Encryption is again depending on what type of sercurity you wants. I would suggest go for WPA.
After editing the above info. do not fail to note the KEY before clicking Apply
Now just enable the WIRELESS CONNECTION on your PC /
Laptop,
Pull the SSID of your router and Click connect.
It will ask for the WEP/WPA key?
Enter the key and Click connect.

First you need to create a administrator account on both computers. Make sure that you have ipx and spx protocols and both comptuer installs. Take you laptop back to your router and log into with the gateway address and go to the wireless tab. There you can create a network key, which is known as a password.

connect any one of the computers to the router with a ethernet cable. open internet explorer, clear out the address bar on the top, and type 192.168.2.1. when u hit enter, u'll get a router set up utility. in this page u'll have an option -security- below "wireless". when u click security, it'll ask for a password, leave it blank and hit submit. on the next window, choose the option WPA/WP2, then u'll have some more options, look for PASSWORD(PSK).. put in a password which should be 8 to 63 characters long, its case sensitive. click on apply changes.

Windows vista,MAC-security:WPA.If your using for eg vista and xp then choose WEP as xp wont support WPA.

Please go in to your router and change the wireless setting from WPA2-PSK to WEP. Ansd then try to connect your laptop.
To windows after you change setting to WEP
(XP bottom right hand side you have system tray in that you have a wireless sign click on it. It ask for the password which you will change put that password click connect)
For laptop also same in case it not work then
(window icon>control panel>network and sharing center>wireless connection>properties>put the password click connect (then it will check out the wireless signal after sometime you will'be able to connect).
Hope this will resolve your issue.

Can't connect to my router anymore (WEP encrypted).

Hi deray953,

First we need to remove the previous profile in your wireless network. I believe you know the SSID for wireless connection using WEP security. You can check this by going to;

Using Windows XP SP2/3
1. "Control Panel" > Switch control panel to classic view ( look at the upper left side ). > Double click "Network Connections" > Right click "Wireless Network Connections" > choose "Properties"> Click the Tab "Wireless Networks" ( middle tab) > go to the list of profiles and remove the Wireless name or SSID for your home connections. > click OK and Close the properties of wireless.

To reconnect again, you need to know your WEP key or network key for wireless connections if not, you can do this procedure...

1.Connect the computer to one of the four LAN ports (i.e port 1, 2, 3 or 4) on the back of the router. The corresponding port light where you connected the computer should be lit up.

2. Access the router's web-based utility.

a. Please open any web browser like Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator.
b. Connect to the router by typing http://routerlogin.com/basicsetting.htm or http://192.168.1.1 in the address field and click Enter or Return key.
c. A window will prompt for a user name and password. By default, the user name is "admin" and the password is "password".
d. Click on the Wireless Settings under Setup.
e. take note of the KEY 1 ...that is your WEP key..take note of it.

Connecting Through Wireless Zero Configuration (Windows XP SP1 and SP2)

For Windows XP Service Pack 1:

1. Please right click on the Wireless icon on the right lower end portion of your computer. Then, click on View Available Wireless Networks.
2. Click on the Advanced tab.
3. Please delete all the preferred networks then click on OK.
4. Right click on the Wireless icon again and click on View Available Wireless Networks.
5. Please select your network and click on Connect. If you have Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or Wi-fi Protected Access (WPA) enabled on the router, it will ask you for the network key. Please type in the Network Key and then confirm it.
6. Make sure not to enable IEEE and then click on Connect.

For Windows XP Service Pack 2:

1. Please right click on the Wireless icon on the right lower end portion of your computer. Then, click on View Available Wireless Networks.
2. Click on the Change Advanced Settings.
3. Click on the Wireless Networks tab remove all the preferred networks then click on OK.
4. Right click on the Wireless icon then click on View Available Wireless Networks.
5. Select your network and click on Connect.
6. If you have Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) or Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) enabled on the router, it will ask you for the network key. Type in the network key and confirm it. Then click on Connect.

Note: You may use the wireless utility of your wireless adapter in connecting to the wireless network but you need to clear "Use Windows to configure my wireless networks" on the Wireless Networks tab.

Connecting to a Wireless Network on Windows Vista:

b. Connect to a network window will show up.
c. Select your wireless network's name or SSID and click Connect.
