Re: How do i hook up a PS3 through my denon avr1905?
ONCE YOU CONNECT THE OPTICAL CABLE AT THE DENON, YOU ALSO NEED TO CHECK THE AUDIO SETTING FOR THE INPUT USED AND MAKE SURE OPTICAL IS SELECTED AND LAST ONCE YOU SELECT THE SOURCE INPUT USED TO CONNECT THE PS3 TO THE DENON PRESS THE INPUT MODE BUTTON ON THE FRONT LEFT OF THE DENON UNTIL YOU SEE DISPLAYED THE WORD AUTO, THIS SHOULD GET YOU SOUND AS LOND AS THE PS3 IS OUTPUTING AUDIO OVER THE OPTICAL

Having both HDMI and Fiberoptic cables causes conflicts with one another, HDMI carries both video and audio signals HDMI = Best. Hook your PS3 to your audio source with HDMI. then configure it through your PS3
The best way to use the Denon and get your money's worth is to connect all devices to the Denon using HDMI connects if possible, if you use HDMI make sure you assign the audio if needed.
HDMI from Denon to TV. the Denon will upconvert all signals to HDMI to the TV
works great, plenty of plug-ins, easy set up, but you get 2 hdmi ins 1
out. hdmis' work great one cable for sound and video but the denon
avr588 doesn't accept sound through the hdmi cable.(it's noted in the
manual) why not? i don't understand. so you go with optical or coaxial
for audio. it works but extra cables.
If your TV has an HDMI input, hook up the PS3 w/an
HDMI cable to the TV. This will give you a high def picture (set up the
PS3 to output the max resolution your TV displays). That will take care
of the video side.
Next hook up an optical cable from the PS3 to the receiver. In the PS3
menu, you have to change the audio settings to output the sound via the
Finally to get sound out of the receiver to the speakers, you have to
setup the receiver source input. For example if you setup the PS3 to
play thru "VCR" input, then you have to make sure the VCR input is
setup to use either optical 1 or optical 2 for sound (whichever one you
have the optical cable plugged in from the PS3).
I found this solution on a different site... it worked for me. I needed to change the sound settings in my ps3 to optical... then i selected dolby 5.1.... that took care of my sound.
The Denon 688 does not process sound via HDMI, you have to run a seperate cable to get sound. Choices are analog audio jacks (red and white) or either a toslink (optical) cable or an rca digital audio cable.
If you have two optical inputs and two equipment (PS3 and HDVD) then you shouldnt have a problem at all. Just make sure you change the mode of the receiver to TV/SAT when you want to use the HDDVD. Your problem may be the video out put.
If i was you i would do the following:
1. Get rid of all your optical cables as you won't need it.
2. If your receiver support HDMI then by default HDMI will send both video and digital sound.
3. Plug the HDMI of the PS3 to the HDMI input of the receiver, plug the HDMI of the HDDVD player into the HDMI 2 of the receiver and plug 1 HDMI cable from the receiver to the tv/monitor you have.
That is the best set up so when you play PS3 you select dvd/ld and when you watch hddvd you select tv/sat.
However having said all that the fact that you have dvd/ld suggests you actually don't have HDMI at all on the receiver(...i just checked the specs of the receiver). Which means you will need to have 2 hdmi inputs for your tv and you will need to have the 2 optical connections.
