Hi there and welcome to FixYa. There could be a couple of things off the top of my head that could be giving you the problem, so we'll try solutions for them both.

A) Go into the menu of your camera and format your cards. Your camera won't save pictures to a card properly if you don't format it first. - Go into the Setup menu for this. And remember, you have to format the cards in the camera, don't use your pc or a card reader.
B) The above will take care of your problem unless.... your cards are locked. SD cards have a switch on the side of them so you can lock the card (it prevents accidental erasure). In that case, unlock it with the switch on the side. Let me know with a comment if you have any questions or problems, or if either of these solutions doesn't do the trick.

My camera does not not even recognize the card so I can't format the card and the card isn't locked. I've put in different memory cards and it still can't read them...

Put the card in your camera then turn the camera off. Then turn the camera back on then see if it recognizes the card.

That didn't work I've tried cleaning it too I think it may be an internal problem

No offense, but you are using the correct card for your cam..right?

  • zscott318 Jul 22, 2011

yes i've had the card for a while now and it's worked fine up until now. I literally took some pictures, turned the camera off and a while later turned it back on and it said no memory card.

    Which card are you using?

Then you might be right. Sorry, but without looking at it, there is not too much more I can do.

Card lock for powershot S5IS

Look at your memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

Hi, I sure hope you guys can help me out! I am trying to download some pics from my computer onto the 4GB memory card in my Canon Powershot A460, but the camera won't let me. The reason I'm doing...

Sorry, no. The camera will let you read the card to transfer pictures to a computer, but it will not let you write to the card to transfer pictures the other way around.

You can buy a card reader that plugs into the USB slot on your computer. Despite the name, a card reader will also let you write to the card. Once the card is plugged in, it will appear as another hard drive.

The card reader will also be a better way to download pictures from your camera. It's likely to be faster and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Cannon s5is powershot as soon as i turn camera on a memory card error comes up and theres no card in it, does same thing when card inserted. it's got to be something in the camera slot, is there a lock in...

On the SD card there is a little switch you can move. It has 2 positions, LOCKED, and UNLOCKED. To make the card available, put the switch in the UNLOCKED position.
Here is an example-

If that doesn't work, try putting the card into a memory card reader, like on your PC or a special USB attachment. If the memory card is recognized, then it might be a problem with your camera.

Hi - I have a Cannon Powershot S5IS Camera - just now i transferred all the pics to my computer. Then i disconnected it from my system. Now again when i try to connect the camera to my PC - it does not...

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer. The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo cataloging program.
