You need the proper cables. I would call your local cable office and ask them. You will need the model # off your TV. 2001 mitsubishi 1080P HD TV is not the model. The model will start with VS. It is located on the rear of the TV.
Yes, it could be the mirrors or the engine but the first and most cost effective thing to do is to replace the lamp as Mitsubishi has suggested. Your set is five years old and it's due for a lamp replacement anyway and if you call a tech out to come fix it, they are going to charge you for the trip, the time and the lamp (double the retail of what Mitsubishi will charge, by the way) when you can just replace it yourself for $100 from Mitsubishi. Even if it's something wrong with the mirrors and engine, the repair service is going to change the lamp as well and charge you for it.
You can order replacement lamps through Mitsubishi's website or if you need it overnight call them and they'll charge you an extra $50 for that. Do not buy a lamp from an after-market, third party vendor. They are far more expensive, they usually don't come with the cartridge and they are not as good as the OEM from Mitsubishi.
Go into the setup of your Bluray player and in Video setup reduce the resolution to 720p from the default setting of 1080p. Some Bluray players have a button on the remote labeled HDMI. Every time you press this button the output resolution will change from 480p / 576p / 720p /1080i /1080p. Try one of the lower resolution that way it will strain your TV's graphic processor a little less.
