Hello, Working on SD-V291 dvd/vcr combo. Will not read the dvd, but after a few minutes saids incorrect disc. It will play CD's ok. It came in with the dvd tray out of place and hitting the optic pickup unit. All looks ok. Bad pickup????? Thanks, Karl Kvicala
-   Up until a few days ago the SD-V291 worked fine. Now DVDs that I watched a couple of days ago I get feed back, "Reading Disc", then "No Disc", tried a DVD laser DVD cleaner, same results.

Most likely the pickup is defective, or something is out of alignment. The tollerances are very close on these, and if something is just a few mills out, it will not work properly.

P.S.
Some players might not be initialized in this sense at all - or the information may only exist somewhere in Japan.
hi! its easy! the DVD u r playing is not in ur region format. i mean it might be PAL .... but if u live in US, Canada, or anywhere in America, it should be NTSC.... download convertxtodvd from the website of its own and then add ur avi or any format video.. then go to settings, and in settings go to DVD specifications... then scroll down the format box and select ur region format... NTSC is AMERICA, ASIA and PAL is EUROPE. after selected, go back to the main screen, and select convert.. now this may take a big time process.. maybe 2 hours as it is converting bad quality avi format to excellent quality dvd format , after that , when done, burn the dvd and play on ur DVD VCR player!!!! i had the same prob too!! i read the dvd manual for it!!!
pssssst.... i wasted over 12 DVDs to fix my prob :0......well thts it!! try it!!! ask me anyquestions u have.. my email id is: ishaan_m2902@yahoo.co.in .......!!!!!!!! :)

Varies from one manufacturer to the next. A Toshiba authorized servicer may be able to get you this info - or perhaps a Google search if you're lucky. Some newer players can have their firmware loaded / upgraded using a cd-rom burned with that specific firmware and updating program.

I have seen some Pioneers etc that need to be re-initialized. This could be your issue.

What kind of DVD disc are you trying to play? That unit is not compatible with any dvd-rw or dvd-ram disc and also will not play out of region discs.

The machine is completely dead like it isn't getting electricity; however the tv is hooked into the same power strip and it is fine so something must be wrong with the dvd/vcr player. Any ideas?
