Question about Dometic RM2852 Refrigerator

Dometic refrigerator inconsistent temperature

I have a six month old Dometic refrigerator model RM1350 (13 cu. ft.) that worked fine the first four months I owned my fifth wheel. The past couple months, the temp will rise for no apparent reason. With the doors left closed I have seen the temp display go from 38 degrees at bedtime and be 50 degrees in the morning. At first this appeared to happen randomly about once a week and began to happen more frequently over time. Now it happens almost every day. A week ago, I took my fifth wheel to Holday World of Houston. They keep me there for two days to run some tests required by Dometic. After wasting two days of my time and charing me $145 without repairing the problems, Holiday World stated that Dometic had declared there was no problem with the refrigerator. The high refrigerator temps were due to too much space on each side of the refrigerator in the cabinet. No explanation why the refrigerator cooled with no problems for four months in the same cabinet. They claimed the refrigerator had to be removed and the cabinet rebuilt. There was about 3/4 inch of open space on each side of the refrigerator. I filled the open space with insulation and still have the same cooling problems. The temp display does not always show the actual refrigerator temp that I have checked with a normal room thermometer. Sometimes the temp display shows 5 to 10 degrees higher than the actual refrigerator temp. I discovered that running the built-in refrigerator diagnostic test appears to reset something because the temp slowly comes back down over 24 to 36 hours. I have measured a temp of 50 degrees with the room thermometer while the temp display on the refrigerator indicates 55 degrees. I then run the refrigerator diagnostic tests and over a 24 to 36 hour period the temp display and the actual temp inside of the refrigerator will slowly come down. Does this really appear to be a cabinet problem as Dometic technical support claims? Or could there be something wrong with the refrigerator controls? A circuit board problem? A thermostat problem? I can't get Dometic to honor their warranty because they claim that the problem is with the cabinet built by the fifth wheel manufacturer which happens to be Pligrim International who went bankrupt in December. Seems to me a convenient excuse by Dometic to blame a bankrupt company which they no longer have to sell refrigerators to. And screw the end customer stuck with their crappy expensive refrigerator. Has anyone else had similiar cooling problems with their Dometic refrigerator? I can be contacted via e-mail at larry.fichtner@hotmail.com

We have a Dometic RM 2862 refrigerator installed in our 2005 Mobile Suites 5th wheel. The freezer works fine but the refrig. will go from 32 degrees to 60 degrees in one day. It seems to recover a little over night but then goes right back up during the day.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Same problem but with a 2006 RM2454. It worked fine for 2 years then started doing the same erratic cooling on gas last year. Seems OK on 110V. Don't know about 12V as I stopped using that option after showing up at my destination more than once with a low house battery. I'm going to replace the thermistor and the control board as everything else has checked out. Replacement Dinosaur board should be here by the weekend. Hope it works as I'm quite frustrated by this problem.

We fixed our problem by replacing the fridge two weeks ago and the new one seems to be working so much better than the old one. Only have it set on 4 and it cools fine. When they took out the old one there was 3 inches of insulation on both sides and the top. Sent our paper trail of problems to Dometic and they say sorry our warranty is expired even though we have had problems all along. We took the extended warranty on this one which gives us 6 yrs. I really wanted to get a Norcold but the wood panels would have to be cut down so got another Dometic.

My refrigerator temperature isn't working

My Kenmore refrigerator was 14+ years old. It had been slowly losing feon for sometime. When I called a repair man to check it over and possibly recharge it, his response was considering the age of the unit, don't waste the money on repair but buy a new one. That's what I did and am now saving about $20.00/month in energy costs.

Stopped cooling

Hello cpuklutz
Welcome

You said, Kenmore; 21 cu ft; 10-years old; just stopped cooling; wondering if it even makes any financial sense to get estimate to repair, or is 10 years about it's trouble free length of service

Here is an article that you may find useful and interesting related to your situation.
Repair or replace?

When to pull the plug on your old refrigerator

It nearly always makes sense to undertake simple do-it-yourself repairs,
such as replacing a gasket on a refrigerator or a freezer.

Typically, you'll also find a troubleshooting section for more-serious problems
in the owner's manual.

Should you pay for a repair or buy a new model?
The answer depends mostly on the age of your refrigerator,
how much you bought it for,and the cost of the repair.

Follow these guidelines:

When a repair makes sense.

If your refrigerator is under warranty or less than four years old (three years for top-freezers),
paying for a repair makes sense.
Note that refrigerators under warranty might require service from a factory-authorized technician;
readers have found them on a par with independent repairers.

When a repair might be a wise choice.

If your refrigerator is out of warranty and is four to seven years old,
it might make sense to pay for a repair. Customers generally pay $100 to $200 for a repair.
But you might want to buy a new model even at this stage,
given that today's models are quieter and have added features.
Higher energy efficiency is another plus: Energy Star-qualified models made after April 28, 2008,
are 43 percent more efficient than conventional models built before 2001 and 56 percent
more efficient than those built before 1993.

When it pays to replace.

The repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new refrigerator.
Data also shows that it doesn't pay to fix a less-expensive top-freezer refrigerator
six or more years old or a bottom-freezer or side-by-side eight or more years old.

Thanks to better recycling programs, less than 10 percent
of a refrigerator you replace is likely to end up in a landfill.

Thank You, HUUUM
