  1. Click here http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=3741 to get the latest version of the ANT agent
  2. Click Download
  3. Follow the onscreen instructions
  4. When correctly installed you should see the ANT logo in the tray on the bottom right corner of the screen
  5. Right-click the ANT logo found in the bottom right corner of your screen
  6. Check that the Pair with new devices option is enabled
  7. Click Open Garmin ANT Agent and you should see that the computer is searching for devices

Before attempting to pair with your Forerunner, you should have some history on it. The easiest way to ensure this is to do the following on the Forerunner 405:

  1. Touch and Hold Training
  2. Press the Start button
  3. Press the Stop button after a couple of seconds
  4. Hold down Lap/Reset

The final thing we need to check is that pairing is enabled on the Forerunner, to do this:
  1. Hold Menu
  2. Select Settings
  3. Select ANT+ Sport
  4. Select Computer
  5. Check that Pairing is On
  6. Select Yes when your PC shows the New Device Detected window
  7. Select Yes on the Forerunner when it confirms the new connection to your PC
  8. Your PC will ask you to name the device, enter your own name for the Forerunner

Make sure Force Send of OFF and all other ANT computer setting are ON.

UN PAIR device

Press BOTH buttons and HOLD until the screen goes BLANK then release BOTH buttons together, this will carry out a SOFT RESET

MOVE the 405 OUT OF RANGE and allow device to go into SLEEP MODE for half an hour

REBOOT your computer

Now re pair device and data SHOULD now transfer

NB make sure you have saved the data by pressing the reset button and waited for the countdown 3 2 1 this will allow data to transfer.

These steps should help you. If you still need assistance let me know. Also please take a moment to accept and rate my solution accordingly.
Thank you,
lee

To reset press the "Mode" and "Reset" buttons at the same time. Let go of those two buttons, press the power button, and the unit will turn back on.

If its still not workin then delete all the Garmin History. This is done on the unit by navigating through HISTORY to "DELETE ALL" and now perform a soft reset.

Please see this link for more details---

Or else update your Garmin ANT Agent software version to latest version 2.1.7 ---

Where do I find a 6 pin serial to usb adapter for the Garmin 421s? I can't find one anywhere on line. Does Garmin sell one? It's Saturday and Garmin's help center is closed. Their on line...

Hello,

The 6 pin DIN plug found on the GPSMAP 421s data/power cable (Garmin part number 010-10918-00) is used for the sonar input.

Data transfer from the GPSMAP 421s is easily transferred by memory card.
Information about data transfer on the 421s is at about 50 seconds into this video.
http://www.youtube.com/gpscity#p/search/6/8ddIgvCAUmI

Real time NMEA data can be transferred using Garmin part number 010-10918-00 wired to a DB-9 serial connector (Instructions are on the cable).

It then can be adapted to USB using a serial to USB adapter.

Unsuccesful installation firmware 2.30 to 2.50

I had a similar problem. After a few attempts I was able to update the firmware to version 2.50. This is what I did:
1. Close the ANT Agent application by right clicking on the icon next to the clock and selecting Exit.
2. Reset the Forerunner 405. Mine was frozen on the LOADER screen. I held both buttons for a few seconds and released them when the rebooting process started.
3. Open the ANT Agent application and then go to the GARMIN webpage to download the update. Make sure you have the latest ANT Agent version.
4. The update process started and ended in about 2 minutes. Then it started again and lasted anothe 9 minutes.
5. The watch reboots with the new firmware version but retains all data amd customs settings.
Good luck.

Updated firm ware on 405

Make sure you have the latest ANT version.
Remove the pending firmwire program that wants to be transfered to the forerunner. (right-click + select delete)
Reset the watch (hold both buttons for 6 seconds, lift upper button, hold lower botton for another 3 seconds)
Then start all over again.
This fixed the problem for me.

I can't update the firmware on my forerunner 405 . The watch gives a transfer unsuccesful message, have tried repeatedly.

There are two steps for the firmware update - two bad Garmin doesn't warn people upfront.

The first update is preparing for the ANT stick - it takes about two minutes.
The second step is the core of the firmware(software per Garmin) update which takes about 10 to 15 minutes depending on how busy the Garmin Connect site is.

Since you already got through and got the "unsuccessful" message, I assume you already know how to start the update properly.
To finish it - Make sure you do not interrupt the process, just let it run through the 2 steps mentioned above.  And be patient - the 2nd step follows the 1st step automatically.  Don't touch the bezel and change screen during the update, just leave it alone.  It took me a few times to get it done successfully because after the 1st step finished, I started to flipping screens to find out if it get updated to ver 2.50, before I found out there would be step 2 coming automatically.
If you see the process bar moving after the 2nd step and see "software loading" you are in for good.

Hope this may help.

Cant install Garmin Connect software

reboot the computer in safe mode. (HIT F8 during the startup) then after the computer loads put the ANT stick in the USB slot and it will then be recognized.

remove it and then reboot normally. Now simply reinsert the ANT stick after starting the ANT agent.

worked like a charm

enjoy

Display show ANT Test Mode...will not respond to anything

I did not solve the problem....it sort of just solved itself which is still extremely aggravating. Don't get me wrong, I am happy it is now working for the most part but to spend this kind of money and have it not work all the time is frustrating. This is not the first time I have encountered issues but I am generally able to reset it on my own. This last issue was just so bizzare that I cannot even begin to tell you all of the things the just popped up on the screen without me even touching it. At one point, it showed ANT Test Off, then it showed a huge X across the screen. Another time it simply read -1.00. After it was done displaying these random bits of data, I tried to reset one last time and had success. However, the data is not uploading to Garmin/connect. So my frustration continues.

MY Garmin 405 wont download data. It make the connection and gets to the tarnsfer point then "transfer failed. I've one route downloaded last week but none since. I tried: resetting both...

I got the same issue and it was because of a software update to ANT+ agent being not compatible with the 405.
here is what I got from Garmin Support.
This solved my problem:
There is currently an issue that has been identified with the latest
version of the ANT agent where it will not transfer data to the computer
from a 405cx. To resolve this please follow these steps
1. If the device has paired it will need to be removed. Right Click on
the ANT agent, select Device Settings then click Remove Device.
2. Right Click the ANT agent and select Exit to close the ANT agent
3. Go to the Control Panel, select Add / Remove Programs and uninstall
the ANT agent.
4. Reboot the computer
5. Download the previous version of the ANT agent from http://www8.garmin.com/software/GarminANTAgent_221.exe
Run this file once it has downloaded
7. Turn on the pairing on the watch ? to do this go to Menu > Settings
> ANT+ > Computer > Pairing (on).
8. Enable pairing on the computer - right click on the ANT agent icon
and select Pair With New Devices > Enabled (this may already be enabled)
The Forerunner and computer should now pair, please be aware that it can
take several minutes for the computer to find the watch.
