I have a home studio with JBL 4412 monitors. I've been using a Crown
PB-2 Power Amp since the early 90's. It is dying a slow cruel death
these days (lots of noise, makes a squealing noise when turned off,
sometimes has a distorted sound from the right channel, etc.)
I would like to replace it with a good power amp that doesn't have a
fan. I'm on a mission these days to regain control over my studio and
make it sound less like an aiport, ridding it of devices that have fans.
Any suggestions?

over to Japan for thousands of dollars. I guess nobody's all that
excited about the solid state amps even though they're perfectly good.

The last two sold for under $800. Not ridiculous.

I have an old McIntosh 2105 I like pretty well. It sounds pretty good
and is pretty bullet proof.

heard from someone who I trust that the Alesis RA-300 is better than
expected based on the rather lukewarm reception of the RA-100 years ago
when it was introduced. He had a Hafler DH-220 or thereabouts die and
needed a replacement quicker than he could repair it, so he bought an
RA-300. It was for a headphone amplifier, so he didn't worry about it,
but when he had the time, he checked it out and said that it sounded
better than the Hafler (he had another one for the second headphone
feed) even when driving speakers, not just headphones.
I'm not suggesting that this is THE amplifier to get, but it's one we
don't talk about much, either good or bad, so it might be worth
checking out. Given the timespan between the RA-100 and RA-300, they
are likely to have very little in common, so the reputation of the
older model may not reflect on the newer one. The RA-100s rarely seem
to die, so that's at least a good start.

What's your budget? There are cheap but solid home amps with unbalanced
inputs like the Adcom GFA-555 and some of the bigger Parasound monoblocks.
There are more expensive amps from Hafler, still more expensive amps from
Aragon and Bryston. All would be good choices with those speakers at their
price point. You don't need anything anywhere near as big as the PB-2.
I would check the speakers out thoroughly if they've been used on high power
amp that has been breaking up. I bet you'll find tweeter damage.
