Western Digital hard drive problem

I've been using a Western Digital 500GB external hard drive as a back up for audio data. I was using it in a session when the laptop shut down. I rebooted everything but the hard drive does 1 of two things: 1 - starts up and doesn't show up on my laptop 2 - starts up, and the LED light keeps spinning, but still doesn't show up.
This happenned once before a few weeks ago, is I stopped using the drive. But then one day i tried it and it worked, till it reoccurred as mentioned above. The drive sounds likes its loading and the disc is spinning but it still doesn't show up...
I'm using a Macbook Intel laptop.

Ok.  I have a WD 500 and I have ran into similar problems.  First, shut your computer down.  Unplug the hard drives USB cable and the power cable.  Wait for about 2 minutes.  Plug the USB cable into the computer, plug the power cord in...wait for 30-45 seconds and then start your computer.  That hopefully should solve your issues.

With your computer powered on, go to Disk Manager. Click on Start>Right Click "My Computer">Manage. From there go to Disk Management on the left hand side. Does your 500 show up. I recently had mine show up there, but it says it was not active. Let me know what you find out.

Hello,

I'm having the same issue as Splitking. It stopped working last night. When I shutdown and reboot, it still doesn't recognize the drive. When the drive is unplugged and powered up, it sounds as though the disc is spinning for a few second and doesn't appear as a drive.

What do I do now? Help!

Thanks,
ZNSPR8502

I tried Shadow1989's solution and it worked perfectly on my mac. I think this method is considered a hard reset.

Thanks Shadow1989.

No problem, glad I could help. This method is kind of a reset. What you are doing is clearing out any errors on the hard drives "cache" and gives it a fresh boot.

Is this a plug and play drive?

In most computers that are encountered, devices that are plugged into the USB ports are "plug & play" capable. There are numerous scenarios that can turn this function off inadvertantly such as a virus, data corruption or driver changes. In order to fix the issue and make an external device, such as a Western Digital Passport Elite hard drive "plug & play" capable, a user will have to make a few system changes. Click "Start" and "Run," then type gpedit.msc Click on "Administrative Templates," from the tree then click on the "System" folder. Double click on "Turn off Autoplay." Select the "Disabled" option and ensure it applies to all drives. Hope this helps,

CRC errors are when the data is corrupted. You should run some tests on the hard drive.

Western Digital 500GB won't turn on.

If nothing is broken inside the harddrive it is possible to retrieve the data, all you need to do is take the hard drive out of its housing and plug it into your dvd drives slots, eg, using the power supply cable and the cable that actually reads the info from the dvd drive. once this is inserted boot up computer and see if your computer reads it. i have personally done this with my broken external and it worked, but note it only seemed to work in the first dvd drive so you may have to unplug your first dvd drive.
hope i helped

Western digital 500gb external hard drive ticking noise- Help !!!

There is a number of data recovery solutions online. Just google it. I would recommend one that sends out a static sensitive bag for transportation. But the customer service rep you spoke with, is probably right. The actuator arm has probably locked up and is failing to move back and forth reading and writing to the platters. Good luck and i feel for you with it being your new born on the hard drive.

Seagate 500gb Free Agent Ex Hard Drive - Class Action siut

DO NOT buy a Seagate freeagent drive under any condition if it comes as a gift return it or re-gift to some one you don't like. Like so many others my 500GB external drive just quit working. Has only been plugged in about 6 times and then back into a cabinet to keep safe. In 10 years between 2 workstations 3 laptops and 4 external drives. The only drives that have ever gone bad are the Seagates and newer Maxators. I still have 4 Western digital drives that still work and get used in an external case for back up. They have never failed. Seagate should be responsible for data time and mental anguish.
