Question about Whirlpool Ultimate Care II LSQ9549L Top Load Washer

Agitator on Whirlpool Ultimate Care II won't agitate

This machine is at least 10 years old, model LSQ8243HQO. For some time the agitator has made noise, has probably been the cause of numerous torn clothing and now will only stop & start as it travels clockwise. The only way we can make it agitate is to push down on the center of the softener dispenser. Queston: Does it look like replacement is the prudent option or might it be repaired for less than 1/2 the price of a new one ?

    Dear aborcass,

Thanks very much for your suggestion. I'm absolutely sure you know what to do in this case. However I got another answer from elsewhere on the internet. In that case they suggested I buy a repair kit "ap3094543 at Is this the same as your suggestion to buy agitator dogs, part #80040? I'd be grateful for any comments from you.

    Thanks, deartyler

How to separate auger from agitator. whirlpool ultimate care II

When you look down into the agitator, are there 4 white plastic points that look slightly melted or otherwise deformed? If so, using a small flat head screw and a small hammer, separate the white plastic from the surrounding translucent plastic. Once you've done that, it should easily pull apart.

Pull the agitator off and check the plastic drive hub at the top of the agitator shaft. It should not be split, or have it's internal splines sheared off. If this all looks ok, then likely transmission problems or a slipping drive belt (motor to transmission). Good luck!

Whirlpool Ultimate Care II top of agitator don't agitate.

This problem is caused by worn agitator dogs. The following link explains how to replace them:

The upper portion of the agitator you mention is called the "auger". The small teflon dogs have teeth on them and act as a clutch to drive the auger when the agitator is in motion. The teeth wear out and become smooth, causing the auger to slip. The replacment part number is included in the link I provided. You can choose to order on line at, or All three sites offer competitive pricing, so shop all three for the best price. If you do not wish to shop online, take the part number provided to your nearest appliance parts retailer. This is a common part, they should have in their inventory.

I hope you find this information helpful. Let me know if you have further questions.

Whirlpool ultimate care II super capacity plus ser.# LSQ8243HQO The top half of adjitator is not turning at all.

If the bottom half of the agitator is turning and the spin cycle works, then the motor coupling is good.
Check the agitator by turning it back and forth. It should work like a ratchet (turns one way, locks the other way). If you're able to turn it in both directions, the agitator dogs are worn and need to be replaced. To do this remove the agitator cap and the bolt that holds down the agitator. With the bolt out you can remove the top section of the agitator (auger) where you should see 4 small white or beige plastic gears (dogs). Replace those and it should be ok.
The part number is 80040.

If it there is no agitation or spin, replace the motor coupling.
The part number is 285753A

The agitator does't work on the Whirlpool Utimate II & this washer is about 7-8 years old

You must replace the agitator dogs. Pop the top cover of the agitator to access the 4 defective parts. They are pear shaped.
Tools required.
