The output to the loudspeakers float at about half the battery voltage in most factory fitted systems. If a wire feeding a loudspeaker has chafed and shorted momentarily to the bodywork, that would explain the popping noise as you switched on the vehicle and it may have taken out the power stage within the radio.
Possible scenerio's with the little info you gave.
1.You have a bad speaker thats blown or the wires are touching the chassis of your car.
2. You have a factory amp and you need to connect the blue wire to the amp turn on wire. And if it still doesnt work then you have to rewire it complete or maybe have to get a special car amplifier compatible harness so your aftermarket works with your amplified system in your car.
3. In certain Ford cars they crisscrossed the back speaker wires. To test this unplug your harness from the radio. VERY IMPORTANT( splice these colors of wires in the middle enough so you can use a 9volt small rectangular battery to make the speakers you want to test pop(harmless)) 1. green = back left + speaker 2. green/black = back left - speaker 3. purple = back right + speaker 4. purple/black = back right - speaker
test green speaker wires first touch battery to the + and - and the speaker should pop if not you have already discovered the problem. Know this time pop the green + and the purple/black - on the 9volt battery if the speakers pop you have found the solution.
Just criss cross the the negatives of the back speakers. From the radio harness end attach green to green, purple to purple, green/black to purple/black and last purple/black to green/black. And all your speakers should work again.
Dont ask me why late Ford Models crisscrossed their speaker wires. They just did.
If it is an older vehicle you could have interference from the ignition system. You can wire the radio to be powered up from a toggle switch that get its power straight from the battery, with a fuse between the battery and switch of course. This will eliminate powering up the radio with the ignition switch and take the ignition system out of it. Also need to make sure the ground wire is grounded good and the ground wire is the same wire guage if not larger than the power wire.
What you have been told is correct, these proprietary systems are great for the manufacturer, but when they start to have issues (and they will) they leave you 2 options: pay through the nose to stay original or replace the amps with new ones....the upside of this is aftermarket amps are soooo mugh better than stock that it is lauhgable.
Does this only happen when you turn the stereo on? If so, it's perfectly normal. It happens when the amplifier in your stereo powers up. It's an older car with "unshielded" wiring that isn't going to be grounded properly. Oh, and to answer your question, yes, the plus (+) and minus (-) are for positive (+) and negative (-) terminals. Make sure that red is on positive and black is on negative. Reversing the polarity (installing the wires backwards) normally won't make the system stop working but it can damage your new speakers.
You also should make sure that you've connected the stereo ground. It will probably be screwed onto the back of the stereo and if there isn't a provided green wire in the bundle coming from the car than you'll just need to find a place to attach it to the car's metal chassis.
Hi Jon, you need to hook the Remote wire up to the Radios Blue remote wire. The car battery power stays on all the time. The blue Remote wire watches to see when the radio turns on, and signal the amp to turn on as well.
