When I insert a DVD into my HP laptop, it cannot read it. It says there is no disk entered. It used to work, just one day it just stopped working. It reads some DVD's, but others it won't. It is so weird. And the DVD is clean, and spot free.

Re: HP laptop DVD Problems.
Are the DVDs youre having problems playing movies? If so the decoder may be missing. Confirm for us if the disks youre having trouble with are movies. Data DVDs should play with or without a decoder. Programs such as PowerDVD should solve your problem if this is the case.

Try using a known-good (for instance, a movie you just watched on your TV). If it doesn't read that disc, make certain you have seated the disk in the drive properly (Laptop drives have a *CLICK!* when you have seated the disc properly). If that doesn't work- if the laptop is in warranty, get it fixed. If not, use an external drive to fulfill your media needs
Hi there its a common problem with maximum laptop. Reason is hi speed DVD. CD work but when you run DVD a bad noise is came from the Disk driver, is it? Try to clean the lens & slowly insert the DVD in laptop & then see what happens. If no changes then you need to replace the Disk Driver. Just Let you know I also have the same problem & i am not going to change it , because i know i will face same problem after few months. Thanks.
Find a "bootable" CD-R disk (Ubuntu Linux, Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows 7) and restart your computer, and tell it to "boot" from the disk inserted into the CD/DVD disk. If it reads from the CD/DVD, then the hardware is OK. If it cannot read the disk, then it's time to replace the "broken" CD/DVD device.
Turn the computer off.
Turn the computer on, and look for a message like "press BLAH to enter System Recovery".
When you see the message, press the BLAH key.
This will start a complete "restore-to-factory" install of Windows.
Or, if you have a set of "System Recovery" CD/DVD disks from HP, then insert the 1st disk,
restart your computer, and select to boot your computer from the CD/DVD drive.
Or, there may be software already on your computer that lets you "burn" a set of "System Recovery" CD/DVD disks -- have 10 CD-R disks, and 5 DVD-R disks -- you may need to use most of these "blank" disks.
That is a lens problem, CDRW and DVDRW use different focus , and the lens is working only on DVD , try using a lens cleaner disk. That probably will not work, in that case replace the DVDRW that is not an expensive part.
If the unit was working ok and suddenly the unit stop to read the blank disk, the problem could be related to a dirty lector (need to clean) or unit firmware (need to be updated) In that case you can update your firmware here:
