one of 2 things can do this,first unplug the unit from the power if it continues to fill then its the water fill valve thats bad,second if it stops filling when unplugged from the power outlet then its probably a plugged pressure switch line from the tub so the water pressure cannot switch the pressure switch diaphram from fill to wash cycle,open the cover and remove the pressure hose from the tub and blow into it and you will hear a click in the pressure switch its connected to,then replace hose onto tub side and blow into the other end of this same hose and make sure theres air movement in the tub as you will see and hear bubbling noise
1) the water inlet valve that the hoses from the house plumbing attach to is sticking open,when it sticks it will stick open regardless if thier is power to the machine or not,so to determine if that is the problem,start the washer and quickly unplug it,if the water continues to fill, that valve is sticking
2) the water level switch is defective,do the same as far as starting it,if the fill stops when power disconected it's the water level switch that is in need of replacement

Thanks for choosing FixYa and welcome. This sounds like a problem with the water level switch in the washer. It controls the amount of water entering the tub. It is probably defective. You may want tomake sure the switch is getting power first by testing the wires with a voltage meter.
if you can turn the washer off while it is still filling. and the water continues to enter the machine you have a bad inlet valve.
Do me a favor turn the washer to fill, with the washer still running unplug from the wall. If the water is still entering the unit you have a bad inlet valve

The fill valve opens and the house water pressure pushes the water into the washing machine. No cold water or no hot water - The fill valve has two coils, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. It is possible that one of the coils can fail and you loose that filling ability. If the cold water coil quits, the hot will still work and during warm fill you will get hot water only and during a cold fill you will get no water at all. If the hot coils quits, you will still have cold water fill, cold water only on a warm setting and no water on a hot fill setting. Some Maytag washers have a fuse in the fill valve circuit, if this fuse let go the washer will not fill. Fill valves can also from time to time stick open and not stop filling. If you have to shut off the fill valves to stop the water from filling in the washer, you have a bad fill valve and you will have to replace it.
Water level controls - The water level control is also know as a pressure switch, this is where you set the water level ( small - medium - large ). The water level control is responsible to shut off the power to the fill valve and direct that power to the timer so the washing machine can start up. The WLC has electrical contacts in it that sends power to the fill valve and when the WLC is satisfied the water level is correct the electrical contacts open power to the fill valve and send the power to the timer and the washer starts. Picture of thishere. How the water level control knows when it is time to shut the water off is, a air tight hose runs from the outer washer tank to the water level control. As the water fills the outer tank air is pushed up the hose, depending on which setting you have made ( small- medium - large ) is takes a certain amount of this pressure to make the WLC cycle over and shut off the water and send this power to the timer. If this hose develops a leak or a pin hole the washer can over fill as the WLC may not be able to shut the water off. The water level control can also break down and allow the washer to over fill as well. try turning the mach off while it is spinning and filling.if it continues to fill or drip heavy,the mixing valve is not closing completely and needs to be replaced.if the water stops when the mach is turned off,there is a problem with the pressure switch.
A defective pressure switch can interfere with the cycles that depend upon the switch to indicate when water has filled or emptied from the tub. It can also result in underfilling or overfilling of the tub. The switch routes current from the timer control to the temperature switch and the water inlet valve when the tub needs to be filled. Once full, the pressure switch cuts the current and reroutes it to the motor on the timer control to continue the cycle.
