The machine doesn't work. I can record a message but that's all.

I don't know what other information would be helpful.

Uniden d1680 answering machine doesn't record messages, only dial tone.

If the system doesn't answer the call at all then you need to turn the answering system on. If it answers the call but does not record a message then you need to turn "Announce Only" off. Both of these are in the Answering System Menu options described on page 13 of the manual.

If I get this AT&T 1739 answering machine will it retreive messages when I am on the phone with someone else, also can I record my own message on it for my business

Without call waiting or a second line, callers will get a busy signal if you're already on a call. This happens at the switchboard; it doesn't matter what type of answering machine you have because the second call doesn't get that far.
You can record your own message on the 1739 but, as mentioned above, if you're already on a call then the second call never gets that far.

We don't know how to retrieve out messages from outside the house.

To play back messages remotely, first you'll need to have set up your two-digit security code (PIN). You can download a copy of the manual here which gives all the details. Once you've done that, here's how to use the system:

1) Call your telephone number and wait for the system to answer. If the answering system is off, it will answer after about 10 rings and sounds a series of beeps.
2) During the greeting message (or a series of beeps when the answering system is off), press 0 and enter your PIN code within 2 seconds. The answering system announces the current time and the number of messages stored in memory. You hear "To play incoming messages, press zero-two. For help, press one-zero." You will hear a beep.
3) Enter a command within 15 seconds. Each command thereafter must be entered within 2 seconds. These are the available commands:
  • 0 then 1 Repeat a Message*
  • 0 then 2 Playing incoming Messages
  • 0 then 3 Skipping a Message
  • 0 then 4 Deleting a Message
  • 0 then 5 Stop Operation
  • 0 then 6 Answering System On
  • 0 then 7 Memo Record/Stop**
  • 0 then 8 Greeting Message Record/Stop**
  • 0 then 9 Answer System Off
  • 1 then 0 Help
* For the Repeat a Message function, press 0 then 1 within about four seconds to repeat the previous message, or press 0 then 1 after about four seconds to repeat the current message.

**For the Memo Record and Greeting Message Record function, the first time you enter the corresponding command, it starts the Recording function. If you want to stop the recording, press 0 then 7, 8 or 5.

4) After the command has finished, you hear intermittent beeps indicating that the system is in the command waiting mode. You may enter another command at this time from the chart above.
5) Hang up when you're done.

Cannot find instructions need to put my own message on machine

You haven't given a brand or model, so I can't help with any specific instructions or links to information. But here are some generic tips.

Does your answering machine actually allow you to record your own message? Most do, but there were some sold that had only preset messages available.

Look at the buttons on the machine and see if there's one marked "message" or "record" or "check message". On many machines this button has two functions. Press and release it and it plays the current outgoing message. But press and hold it, and the machine beeps and lets you record a new message. Continue to hold the button while you record your new message and then release it. Most machines then will play back your message so you decide whether you like it. If not, repeat the process.

Finally, visit the manufacturer's website. They generally have manuals for downloading, or how-to information on the site which should get you going.
