Hello,
I've seen a number of these portable DVD players on eBay and was wondering
how to make them region-free. I know that you can purchase them that way,
but I'd like to know how to do it in case a warranty repair is needed and
Lasonic "repairs" it back to normal.
Does anyone have any feedback on this player in general?
Thanks in advance.
Dan

Dan, I'd like to correct my previous message about having to re-enter the
region select code everytime I play a region 2 DVD. It doesn't work. I
had to play with the discs a few more times to figure out what I did.
Here's what you do if your DVD has audio problems:
1. Open the tray and put in the DVD
2. Press SETUP to bring up the settings menu
3. Close the tray and let the DVD spin for a few seconds (to load the
table of contents and region code, I would guess)
4. Press SETUP to turn off the settings menu and the DVD will start to play
and the audio problem should be gone.
I tried it on a lot of my region 2 DVDs and it works everytime!

Dan, I found Lasonic codes on # and while I passed them by
before because they looked like the same ones on other sites, the
instructions had more detail and I managed to figure out the code. Here it
is :)
1. Open tray
2. Press SETUP
3. Press VOL+
4. Press VOL-
5. Press VOL+
6. Press VOL-
7. The region code select screen will appear.
Use the blue arrows on the remote to select.
NOTE: Select '255' to play all regions
8. Press SETUP to save the setting and you can play the DVD
When I first got the player, my Japan region 2 DVDs would play the audio
incorrectly. Some DVDs had no audio, others had only the left channel.
When I first got the code to work, the first Japan DVD I tried had correct
sound. The next disc had no sound. I did find out how to correct this,
though. Everytime you open the tray to insert a region 2 DVD, do the
region select code and select the '255' code, and then the DVD plays fine.
I'm all set, I hope you enjoy the player when you get it, Dan!

Dan, I don't have any PAL discs to try, but when I switch to PAL mode, the
screen flickers and scrolls for a split second, then it adjusts and the
screen looks fine. I suspect PAL videos should work OK. I didn't think
about it before, but I'll try making a short PAL VCD or SVCD and run it
through the player. I'll let you know how it goes tonight :)
About that website with the review, thanks for pointing it out! I'll try
emailing the reviewer for the code, didn't think of that. I'll post the
URL as soon as I dig it up.
Great to hear you ordered the player, it seems to be a great buy all around
:)

Thanks very much for the info.
Too bad about the reset, though. It DOES however tell us that it is a
simple hack via the remote, and not a hardware/firmware modification. Can
you send it back as "defective"?
I did ask the seller about the modification, and he claimed that it was
done in house by "someone", but not him. I did go ahead and order one, and
hope that it works well.
Question: how well does the PAL/NTSC conversion work? There are a few
DVD's from the UK that I'd like to get (R2 as well, aren't they)
No codes included in mine either. I did a major search of the Internet for
the hack and haven't turned up anything either. Too bad you can't remember
the review site- we could email the author.
Please keep us posted. I'll post if I find out anything. I can't believe
that nobody else had the 'reset defaults' problem.

Dan, I bought the Lasonic DVD-8090 off of eBay. It was region-free when
I got it. Here's my results:
- Plays region 1 and region 3 (Hong Kong) DVDs just fine
- MP3s, Audio CDs, Super VideoCDs, and VideoCDs play fine
Drawbacks:
- My Japan region 2 DVDs had audio problems. Some would play the left
channel only, and others had no audio.
- No Fast-forward on the player itself, so when you listen to audio and
MP3 CDs you need the remote control to change songs.
Since the player was set as region-free, I thought I could try setting it
specifically to region 2 so I could test my Japan DVDs. I couldn't get
any of the Lasonic hack codes off the web to work with this player, and I
accidentally selected 'reset defaults' in the setup menu. Now my player
is back to manufacturer settings and can only play region 1 DVDs. I'm
waiting on the hack code to surface.
Other than not knowing the hack code, and that region 2 DVDs have audio
glitches, all the other features work just fine. For the price (I paid
$112.00 including shipping) I don't regret buying it.
If you decide on buying it, you could email the seller and ask for the
hack code. I read a review of the player on the web somewhere and the
person stated that his player came with a sheet containing the codes.
Mine didn't and the seller is not responding to my emails concerning the
code. Oh, well!
Good luck on your decision :)
