Inspiron 1300 cd not recognised

When I put a CD or DVD in to my inspiron 1300 it does not recognise that the CD is in and then when I look in to My Computer it still does not recognise the disk. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you saying the drive doesn't show in the system hardware devices in the control panel?

Try cleaning the lens with a damp q-tip with glass cleaner. This will make sure that dust or dirt isn't affecting the laser.

At this point go ahead and try different discs and if the drive still isn't reading them then the laser is bad and the drive would need to be replaced.

You possibly have outdated drivers or you need to see if there are updates at the manufactures site.
Reload the drivers.

Acer Aspire 5920G wont play dvd, it wont even recognise them!

If it recognises cd but not dvd it means the drive is faulty. There is 2 lasers one for cd and one for dvd. The dvd laser is faulty. It also means that it is not dirty lens because it reads cd's.
