Question about Canon PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera

1 Answer

Powershot S5 IS wont turn on

Camera worked fine the last year. I put it on the shelf, took it off a week later, doesnt turn on no matter what.

I have Canon NiMH batteries. recharged them, no change. Changed to a set of regular Duracell AA, no changed. Changed the memory card, no change. Replaced batteries multiple times, no change. All battery contacts clean. Batteries loaded correctly according to manual. I have no clue. Warranty expired a few months ago. I'm about to open it up with a screw driver.

Any suggestion is highly welcome.

Thanks,

Sebastiaan

OK, since I'm an engineer I couldnt resist the temptation to open up the beast for more than 5 minutes so I opened it up to see what's inside (I can't recommend this due to the small screws any tiny delicate connectors inside). Along the way I discovered and fixed the problem.

As is typical for broken appliances usually the primary method for succesful repair is: open, vacuum clean, close. And otherwise see what happens along the way.

What I found in my case is very simple: when I close the battery compartment latch you are supposed to hear two sort of "clicking" sounds. The first one is a obvious one which happens when the plastic of the lid snaps into the plastic latches on the camera body, it is a clearly audible plastic-on-plastic like clicking sound. The second clicking sound, which was the missing link to make my camera work, is a higher pitched, lower volume, metal spring like snapping sound. I don't know where that latch occurs but it only happens when I push the plastic lid all the way in even after it seems it is already fully secure. Without that second metal-like click my camera won't power on. I can reproduce the problem by closing the battery lid but not to the point of the second "click".

So my simple solution is, push or jam your battery lid all the way in until you hear the metal-spring like clicking sound. Worked for me, hopefully works for you too.

My aperture or lens isn't opening - can't take a picture. It worked fine a couple of weeks ago and when I tried to use it this week it was a no go.

Aperture and lens are two different things. If you mean the camera is taking black pictures (something common for the S5), then see this link.

But if you mean that the lens isn't extending properly, then see this video:

Canon powershot s90 wont turn on. used it and took pics and it worked fine. shut it off. went to use it a day later and dead. new batteries didnt help.

If you already tried a second battery with no luck, you'll need to have it serviced. If the camera is over a year, the manufacturers warranty is up. If that's the situation, go to this site www.camerasandparts.com All they deal with are Canon Powershot cameras and they do excellent work, the best part is they are much cheaper than Canon. They do really great work on the Canons. That's were a lot of people go for help with the Powershot models.

Powershot A80 does not turn on.

Here are some simple things to try first for a camera that won't power on. They won't work for every case, but they're worth a try:

Canon S5 died.

If it was less than a year old, I hope you sent it to Canon for repair.

If not, then you have to have your camera professional serviced to repair it.

It may be an internal switch, the DC/DC converter board, or a defect in the main board.

Best regards,

Poor picture quality

Some one might have messed up with your camera.
some one might have changed the resolution, aperture, manual focus etc of the camera.
Try setting them according to your needs or try resetting the camera.

I have lost the ring for my Canon PowerShot S5 camera and can't find a replacement - not even on the Canon site - any suggestions

Im guessing you checked Ebay? I would keep an eye out for i on there. just becasue its not on there this week doesnt mean it wont be next week.

Won't Turn On

I had same problem. Took it to photo store who sent it to Canon. They returned the camera stating liquid damage, would cost more to repair than to buy new one. I figured what the heck and sprayed WD 40 in the battery compartment. It turned on but wouldn't zoom. Sprayed it again and more worked. After the 3rd spraying it works like new and has for 9 months.

Camera not turning on any more, can't put the memory card back in

Make sure you are putting the card back in the correct way - usually a little symbol to help you on the inside of the card chamber cover or see your manual. Check also that no foreign body has got into the card chamber Come back when you have checked this out.
