Pto on 23 hp. Kholer engine turns on when cold, but won`t turn on when hot.

Check connection at PTO clutch lead wires and PTO switch. Look for signs of overheating (melted connector housing) or loose connections. If no problem found, run 'til failure.

Then with engine off and key in RUN position and PTO switch ON, measure voltage at PTO clutch leads with a DMM (digital multimeter). It should read battery voltage or ~12.5 VDC. If you have battery voltage at the clutch measure resistance. The resistance value vary with manufacture/model. A reading of 2-4 ohms would be typical. A resistance of infinity (open circuit) likely means the clutch coil is failing.

If you have zero volts at PTO clutch leads then probable PTO switch or other depending on mower manufacturer make/model.

I have a Toro LX 500 Lawn tractor the pto clutch will not engage, I have 13 volt at the plug for the clutch , so ordered and installed new clutch... Still will not engage checked volts again had 9.3

PTO Clutch will not stay engaged.
There is a very fine one page discussion on evaluating electric clutches at this site:

http://www.messicks.com/Articles/FixingElectricClutch.aspx

My JD tech manual, which covers the entire LA 100 series, agrees with the electrical specifications. It states that the Electric PTO Clutch should show the following:
  • Resistance 3.7 ohms
  • Current Draw 3.25 amps.
It does not give the air gap. It does include a note to check the PTO Clutch Key for damage or if missing. So there is a drive key between the PTO Clutch and the shaft. Additionally, it recommends checking the tightness of the cap screw. That's the screw or bolt that holds the clutch on the shaft.
  • Cap Screw torque 55 lb-ft (75 N.m).

Pto does not disenguage when I push clutch pedal in

Normally the Clutch/Brake pedal doesn't turn off the PTO.

If the PTO is running, and you do not lock the clutch/brake in the full down position, when you get up from the seat the system will kill the engine. However, the PTO system is still active.
Thus, if you sit back down and try to crank the engine, it won't crank. You must first turn off the PTO switch.

Based on your comment, you are right, the Clutch/Brake will not turn off the PTO as long as you remain in place (and don't try backing up). If you want the PTO to disengage you must turn off the PTO switch.

The pto will not engage when switch to turned on

The light just indicates power is available for the PTO clutch. It doesn't it reaching the clutch. You need to unplug the PTO clutch and check to see if voltage is there. If it is there then clutch itself is bad or the wiring from the connector to clutch is broken. If no power at the connector then you have wiring problem and may even have part of the PTO switch not working.

Why wont john deere stx 30 pto wont engage

Most of these mowers have a safety switch between the PTO switch and clutch. A safety switch or relay is most likely the problem. Hope this will help ya.

Cub Cadet 1861 amp light comes on when the PTO is engaged and after mowing for a short time the PTO disengages and now the 30 amp fuse blows and stops the engine

Sounds like you have a short circuit, either in the PTO clutch, or in the wiring that goes to it. Inspect the wiring for any obvious spots where insulation has rubbed off or burned. Also look at the wiring at the back of the PTO engagement switch for these signs. Before buying an expensive PTO clutch, unplug its connector. Drive around with the PTO switch on (even though the PTO won't activate and the blades won't be engaged). If the fuse doesn't blow, the problem must be within the PTO clutch. If the fuse still blows, it must be in the PTO switch or the wiring from there to the clutch. Use an ohmmeter to trace and find the short. Good luck!
