When in the heat mode the system will start and rune only a few seconds then stop. After a short pause the system will re-start and run ubitl the set temp is reached

Bruce, what you may be hearing is a short cycling of the fan and not a short cycling of the system. The fact that you indicate it only does it once per cycle kinda suggest that. If the ENTIRE unit was shutting down, it could indicate an adjustment in the 'heat anticipation' circuit on the thermostat sub-base was required. The heat anticipator is an adjustible resistor on non-digital thermostats that warm the spring that rotates the mercury bulb to cause it to shut off just a little bit before attaining setpoint...thus 'anticipating' the shut down temp and not 'overshooting' the setpoint.

Too low of a setting and the system will short cycle, too high of a setting and the system will overshoot the setpoint. The typical setting is .4 amp which is where the majority of sub-bases are set at from the factory.

When heat is on the fan never shuts off until just before the heat cycle starts...cools the house off rather quickly therefore heat runs more..when the A/C is on the fan shuts off between cycles how

The heat runs the blower until the heating elements cool to a specific level, to get all the heat out of them. The switch wears out and or sticks (called a Limit Switch). if you have a handyman he may be able to lube it w/electronic lube spray but it may beworn out. $30 part, plus service call.

Heater kicks on and off after heating.

The blower may cycle on and off to cool the heat exchanger. The fan limit still senses the heat after the furnace shuts off and the limit goes up the same as when the furnace first starts. You could adjust the settings on the fan limit.

I have a comfort zone furnace. If it's 50 degrees in the house, and i set my thermostat to 70 or so,it takes at least 24 hours to reach 70 degrees. The furnace starts up and runs normally for about five...

When the thermostat calls for heat it should run until the room reaches the temperature setting then shut off. Is the blower motor running and can you feel air coming out of the vents? It sounds like the blower is either not running or putting out enough air to keep the furnace heating. The blower moves the heat from the heat exchanger to the room, if it can't remove enough heat from the heat exchanger there is a limit switch that will shut the burner off if it gets to hot and that's what it sounds like is happening.

Defrost Cycle Problems with Heat Pump

It's a defrost board issue. The timer on the board or something similar is hanging up. Unfortunately the solution is to replace the board. By lowering the temp. on the T-stat you are resetting the timer on the board. As you see that only works until the next cycle.
