The woofer is not working in my Zenith ZHD-311

Well it was working OK. When I tested the speakers all of them showed up OK including the woofer. It seems that my son changed the plave where it used to be and placed it in the floor, Wuen I go to SETUP all speakers are tested but not the wolfer. It is dead, test skips it. I have try reconnecting, full around with setup to no avail. Many thanks

I already checked. All five speakers are working ok. Only the woofer is not. I checked its connection too. They seem OK.

  • marciovp Feb 28, 2009

The five speakers are working fine when I tested them. But the test doesn't go to the woofer. If I go there manually it says that there us none. It seems tha woofer is dead.

  • marciovp Feb 28, 2009

When I go to SETUP the audio only gives me the choice to go into 5.1 Speaker Setup. If I go there ask test it goes from speaker to speaker OK. They are all on and working. But it skips the woofer when testing and if I go there manually the size says None and if I press test it goes from speaker to speaker but skips the woofer.

  • marciovp Feb 28, 2009

I am almost sure that the problem is not in the wiring from the woofer and the amplifier. It could be instead that the woofer burned out. How I test the woofer?

  • marciovp Feb 28, 2009

We have not been able to go to Surround Sound Options. When we go to SETUP there is only one choice 5.1 Speaker Setup. No other choice. If we go there the woofer is not the

It seems we are not going to solve this...but to stay without the woofer is pain. We have a Sony Bravia TV

  • marciovp Feb 28, 2009

It is getting too complicated. I guess beyond my capacity. Nothing that I thought or you suggested did work. I am not going to open the box. I am afraid. I do not think we will find the way to fix this.

  • marciovp Feb 28, 2009

Yes this will be my last try. Will let it sleep overnight unconnected. Tomorrow we will see and then we decide if we should pursue this further.

  • marciovp Mar 01, 2009

It was disconnected the whole night. This AM the same thing the subwoofer is not tested. Th test skips it. I guess I will have to open the box and perhaps now replace the cable that connects it to the amplifier.

  • marciovp Mar 01, 2009

Thanks to you all...yes...I will have to take the subwoofer and the amplifier to a professional, a shop that deals with the LG (Zenith). By the way I contacted LG and they recommended replaqcing the cable in the subwoofer. Thanks to you all. I was good to have you around to make sure I was not missing anything...

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Offhand, it would appear to be a setting/configuration issue. Initially, reset the system if a button for such purpose is available in your version model. Alternately, or better yet, unplug from the mains for an extended period (or even overnight) to fully dissipate stored internal electrical charge.. The idea is to revert the unit back to factory defaults. Thereafter try again and initiate setup procedures as well as test all modes/speakers.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

The magnet may have been demagnetized by placing it on the floor. it could also be a separation within the cone, preventing the transfer of signal. I would start by checking the connector box on the back of the sub box. remove this and check all couple and grab points for separation.

If the woofer is dead, but the rest of the speakers are working fine then the problem is the wirings to the woofer speaker, the unit must be taken apart and the contacts soldered back again.

All other faults will cause different problems.

The woofer does not burn out, it breaks, and if the digital board inside the woofer blows, then the unit does not start.

The problem are the wirings inside the woofer, and the soldering joints to woofer speaker, one of them has lost contacts.

Seems woofer is disable due to some wrong settings in home theater system.
Please check Amp Setup options and surround sound options to enable woofer.

The woofer is the hardest working speaker in the system and draws allot of amps for the voice coil that makes the cone move, these coils get overheated and burn out, u can replace just the woofer, pull the speaker out and test it, all u need is a 9 volt battery, touch the terminals of the speaker, the cone should thump, do this both ways, first positive to negative and then reverse, if the speaker is defective you can match it up with a new one from many onliine suppliers.

Sound cuts in and out, sound doesn't work unless repeatedly turning on and off. What should I do.

Generally speaking, an amp attempts to protect itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as a root cause for intermittent shutdown.

Just need to know how to hook up to tv to get sound

If you don't have a cable box or satellite receiver, you will use the "Audio Out" or "Monitor Out" from the TV to any audio input on the receiver. It's just a standard RCA cable or if you have an "Optical input" on the receiver, use that. If you are using a cable box or sat, the audio would come from the cable/sat receiver by standard RCA, Optical, or Digital Coaxial, whichever your AV receiver will support. Hope this helps. If you need further help, post a comment and I can walk you thru it.
